Marketing talent isn’t “good” or “bad,” per se. But hiring managers often evaluate candidates in this black-and-white way. They think, “This marketer landed a job at that big company, and they were successful, so they’ll be a great marketer for us.” But that’s not always the case; it’s a lot more nuanced than that. Here’s a framework I’ve used to assess candidates across five dimensions to determine who’s the right marketing hire *for each specific situation*: 1) Personality Traits: For example, if you’re an early stage company, I can’t overstate the value of curiosity. You’ll need a marketer who’s naturally inclined to test and explore, rather than someone who has replicated a specific strategy again and again. 2) Seniority: Again, this will vary by company stage, but ask yourself, “Do we need a great manager of people or do we need someone who can roll up their sleeves and execute a lot of the work themselves?” More senior or strategic is not always better. 3) Company Stage: We see teams get this wrong all the time. Being a successful marketer at a large, late stage company requires a completely different skill set than what’s needed at an early stage startup. Success in one environment could mean striking out in another, and vice versa. 4) Industry: Finding someone with experience in your industry (or one with similar buyer personas) can help your new marketing hire hit the ground running faster. This is more important in some industries than others. 5) Skills: Finally, you *do* want to assess fit based on the channels and tactics you’ll be asking that marketer to execute. A+ practitioners are worth chasing and it often takes one to know one. In my experience, hiring the right marketer(s) for your company is about evaluating talent in each of these five areas. It’s not about good or bad. It’s more often about suitability for your current situation. What would you add to this list? #B2B #B2C #marketing #leadership #hiring #talent

As I reflect on the marketing hiring process, I've realized that incorporating a case study is an excellent way to assess a candidate's abilities. When I was more junior, I didn’t necessarily love case study assignments. However, they offer a great opportunity for candidates to showcase their business acumen and the range of marketing tactics they have mastered. Marketing needs to consider the specific business context in which your company operates. Someone who can quickly grasp the situation and propose hypotheses on effective strategies or tactics is extremely valuable. There are usually no right or wrong answers. It's about showing your thought process and your ability to ask the right questions to understand the business context. We shouldn’t forget that it's also a great way for the candidate to determine if they truly want the job. If you're reluctant to work on the case study assignment, it might indicate that you are not genuinely interested in this particular role. This may help avoid a mismatch.

Marketing is the best way to earn good money from the industry! Yet we find a lot of the professionals who do not like marketing roles. The trouble is not in the role but its representation by the employer, and the negative stigma set for the marketing roles. It has either been characterized as the cold chasing of the customers, or the completion of targets in a particular time period. Now this is not the complete truth, along with this marketing creates the base of any organisation by yielding the core earnings from the customers/clients. Another aspect intimidating the professionals is the complete transition of the marketing roles just to hire a person. You may have interacted for the roles of career counselors, admission counselors, and even some of customer relationship managers who are actually meant to do the marketing/sales for the company. Being a recruiter I know how some companies trick with the designations to hire employees. This has only created doubts between job aspirants and they have started underrating the marketing roles Any such types of interactions, and experiences must not diminish the importance, and advantages of marketing roles. Relatable?? #NewPost #LinkedInUpdates #WorkplaceFacts #CorporateGoals

💡 Four things I didn’t know about Marketing until I became a Marketing Specialist Recruitment Consultant. I'm not ashamed to admit that, until I started to get trained to work as a recruitment consultant and learn about Marketing technologies, I had some preconceptions. 1. I always thought marketing was all about clever campaigns and catchy slogans, but I’ve learned it’s also deeply data-driven. Understanding metrics is just as crucial as crafting the most engaging and perfect message. 2. Marketing trends and tools change rapidly, so the best marketers are those who can adapt quickly and keep up with the latest shifts in technology and consumer behaviour. 3. Marketing is a team offer. Collaboration between different departments (e.g. sales, IT, design...) is key to executing a successful strategy. 4. The best marketers know how to tell a compelling story that resonates with their audience. Storytelling is about connecting on an emotional level, not just pushing products. Being on the other side of the recruitment process has given me a new appreciation for the diverse skills and qualities that make a marketer truly exceptional. What's the one thing that you didn't get until you started working in marketing or with marketers? #MarketingSkills #MarketingCareers #MarketingJobs
