Alberta is investing more in skilled-trades apprenticeships in an attempt to meet the demand for housing. Alberta has prioritized trade apprenticeships that lead to Red Seal certifications — a nationally recognized designation that enables individuals to work outside of the province in which they were trained. But many of the jobs on work sites do not require apprenticeship-level training. “Not everybody needs to be a Red Seal trade,” says Shane Wenzel 🏘️, a Calgary-based home builder who has worked in the construction industry for nearly 40 years. “[On]e of the biggest deterrents to that younger age group especially is the length of time it takes to get that [certification], which is roughly four years.” Read more from Samuel Forster: https://lnkd.in/eGvvjUKe

For those in the apprenticeship space, the new rules for apprenticeship proposed by the Department of Labor have been withdrawn.
Expanding apprenticeship in America to widen pathways to opportunity and grow a competitive workforce.
For those tracking such things, the new rules for apprenticeship proposed by the Department of Labor have been formally withdrawn. Apprenticeships for America analyzed this wide-ranging set of proposals that would have reshaped the practice of apprenticeship in the United States. While we were sympathetic to the aims of many of the proposals, we found the actual rules left a lot of room for improvement. Last week, we learned that the proposed rules have been withdrawn. That's one less thing to think about at the end of the year!

Three very interesting proposals here from David Hughes for changes to the apprenticeships levy. If combined with a fourth change - the idea of broadening from apprenticeships to other high quality quals at L4/5 - then it could really channel public funding towards where it can make the most impact.
"We've got to prioritise apprentice funding where it's needed most" – David Hughes, AoC Chief Executive, on three changes he would make to the apprenticeship levy, at the UK House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee on skills for the future: apprenticeships and training.

Productive conversation on apprenticeships and their impact in Parliament yesterday with Seema Malhotra FRSA, Shantanu Rajawat and Phillip Walker, Director of Lifelong Learning at London Borough of Hounslow. While we are proud that apprenticeship starts are growing at a higher rate amongst 18-year-olds in London compared to the national picture, the current apprenticeship levy system is not working as it should. The current system has limited opportunities for young Londoners and fails to provide the flexibility needed by employers. We look forward to continuing to work with national government & Skills England to make the new Growth & Skills levy work for both Londoners and employers to drive productivity, meet skills gaps, and ensure inclusive economic growth.
