Recently, a peer (amidst the grind of corporate America) made a striking comparison, likening their experience with HR to dealing with the DMV. It hit me—both in agreement and disgust. First, the DMV is an essential, high-value service that employs many great people. So far, maybe they compare. However, be honest: rarely does anyone leave the DMV saying, 'Wow, that was an amazing experience.' Right? If anyone else (like me) has had a similar "DMV-like" experience with an HR department, could we agree that, at a minimum, this is a significant branding problem for HR? What if the problem is bigger than branding? In my 20 years of corporate experience interacting with HR teams—through highs, lows, and everything in between—I have become increasingly convinced of the critical high-value HR is designed to play in all organizations. Why? Because companies are made and operated by HUMANS. I have a high view of HR, positioned best to shape culture, influence upskilling, offer proactive coaching and leadership development before mental health due to work becomes a challenge, and ultimately the upward mobility trajectory of every human in the workforce. We humans are messy; we have many assets and strengths. We are real, we exist every day, including our many needs and challenges. The reality is if our human needs and challenges are not considered, cared for, and resourced, humans struggle, as well as our companies. <... anyone can insert hundreds of mental health statistics illustrating proof of the costs we're all experiencing in the workforce partly due to this problem... > Is there a GREATER responsibility and role than HR tasked with caring for the current and long-term health of the HUMANS within a company? Does Sales or Marketing have a DMV like reputation? Not even close. HR should never have been allowed to earn a reputation like a trip to the DMV. Managing human resources should never be an afterthought; we humans are the heart, the soul, and the energy flow that allows corporations to exist and remain. Yes, it IS time for HR to be disrupted, for the corporate organizational value systems to be redesigned, and then, the HR rebrand can occur with stronger people, teams, products, and services than we've seen before. What are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Other views? Also, if HR isn't like the DMV, what is a more accurate comparison? I'm excited to attend DisruptHR Raleigh-Durham this Thursday to learn more!

💥 Strata Data: "1 year out: 52% of graduates are underemployed 5 years out: 45% of graduates are underemployed 10 years out: 45% of graduates are underemployed 📢 Conclusion: the first job out of college matters! If a student is underemployed to start their career, they're likely to be underemployed later in their career and, thus, earn less." 📢 Invest in your students early - prep them with mentorships and internships as soon as you can.
