I PLEDGE my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service, and my HEALTH to better living, for my family, my club, my community, my country and my world. This is the 4-H Pledge that youth and adults recite at the opening of each meeting. In the spirit of that pledge to clearer thinking, we ask “is there a future for 4-H in Sherburne County?” Last summer, the 4-H horse project funded and painted the barns to freshen them up for fair. Imagine the disappointment as everything the kids worked to prepare for was deluged with rain through the failing roofs on the horse barns as several waves of extreme weather occurred during fair week. The normal flurry of excitement was replaced with an all-out scramble to shift horses to higher ground and wait out the storm while also scrambling to save thousands of dollars’ worth of hay, feed, show clothes, tack and equipment. This is one of many issues that need to be addressed to deal with aging infrastructure and the future of the county fairgrounds. The county has indicated at various times the desire to sell and redevelop the property the fairground occupies. That constant fear of being evicted from the fairgrounds has not served the best interests of the youth or the community at large. Sherburne County businesses and residents are overwhelmingly supportive of 4-H programming when made aware of needs and how they can help. But who will invest in updating and improving the aging infrastructure of a fairgrounds under constant threat of eviction and redevelopment of the property? If the long-range plan is to relocate the fairgrounds, then please, let us begin the dialogue to plan out a timeline and details for beginning that endeavor. We need to at least work together to solve the immediate issues to serve our youth of today as well as plan for the future of our youth. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. My camper trailer is great during a Monsoon or severe Thunderstorm season. It was one of the best Ideas I ever had at the time of my truck accident. My camper has become a best friend of this lifelong soldiers. I believe the Veterans Service Organizations need to take a suggestion from me with regards to housing homeless Veterans. Stop trying to house veterans who need privacy and their own land. Something more than an acre with farm animals and places to relax. They don't want too many neighbors, visitors or welfare checks by biased Police. Police who prefer fighting veterans to helping them, out of some sick sport. It's a set up for institutional confinement by Police, Fire department, State Phycology Doctors, and prison Wardens who desperately need to fill empty Jail cells. That and private mental health wards for profit as well. If the VSOs cared about a veterans dignity? VSOs could provide sponsorship to the manufacturers of #SylvanSport for every individual homeless veteran in Phoenix AZ, and later thought America. I saw these campers lined up around a city block? It would not offend me at all. It would not be an I saw. The military trains its combat soldiers to depend on their life safety training. Ride Illinois board member, Cynthia Hoyle. FAICP, LCI, was recently interviewed by Illinois Public Media to discuss the need for safe, connected infrastructure for bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users. Present-day infrastructure makes driving the only real option for too many Illinois residents. But people, especially younger generations, want options. For the sporty types, all types of sports courts, golf putting greens, and lawns scaled as fields are ideal additions to any backyard! Golf greens are particularly easy to maintain if done with faux turf (We know, we know… but actually the green plastic stuff is getting a lot nicer! We are surprised by the realism of the newly developed ‘grass,’ and with no watering, no mowing, and no weeds to mess up your game, it does have its advantages.)
