I n s t a g r a m The "& Artwork" campaign continues on Instagram, and today we’re highlighting Lichtkreise, a fascinating light installation by artist Brigitte Kowanz. The three light rings floating above the Leopold Museum are part of the MQ-Libelle installation in #Vienna. These circular steel beams and their diagonally inclined steel columns are rigidly fixed to a concrete base using a head plate connection (...). An artist, performer and associate professor at a London art school, Joseph Kohlmaier commissioned London‑based GIANNI BOTSFORD ARCHITECTS LIMITED to remodel a cluster of disused farm buildings on the Isle of Wight to serve as a home as well as a residency and workspace for visiting artists: https://lnkd.in/eGWMhXYH ‘Prioritising retention over demolition, the project preserves and consolidates the two barns through a series of deft, light‑touch moves,’ Catherine Slessor writes of the project, highly commended in the AR House awards. ‘On the non‑courtyard sides, the existing brick walls are wrapped in corrugated fibre‑cement board, a quotidian material commonly used in agricultural and industrial buildings. On the courtyard sides, a milky translucent and highly insulated new polycarbonate facade is punctuated by large, glazed aluminium doors which afford individual entrances to each of the living and workspaces. After dark, the polycarbonate glows with the soft, seductive intensity of a Japanese shoji screen, hinting at comings and goings within.’ Read more in the latest issue: https://lnkd.in/etHt5Sd7 📷 Schnepp Renou / aerial image by James Eagle

Precision and care are the unseen tools behind every masterpiece. 🎨 When the National Galleries of Scotland needed to investigate its grounds, our team used Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to map hidden utilities, uncover the extent of hidden tunnels and protect this historic site. A fascinating coincidence? The painting featured in the case study photo was created in Newlyn — the home of Ordnance Survey’s Mean Sea Level, a foundation for accurate mapping in the UK. Explore how GPR supports projects like this while safeguarding cultural treasures: Read the case study here. https://lnkd.in/gjih4EMS #Surveying #GPR #ScottishNationalGallery #OSmapping #utilities #utilitysurvey #historicbuildings #architecture #art

This captivating black and white photograph from around 1935 offers a rare glimpse into the construction of one of America's most iconic landmarks: the Golden Gate Bridge. The image showcases the bridge in its nascent state, with one of its massive Art Deco-style towers standing tall against the backdrop of San Francisco Bay. The tower's distinctive design is already apparent, hinting at the architectural marvel it would become. The photograph's most striking feature is perhaps the intricate network of suspension cables cascading from the top of the tower. These cables, which would eventually bear the weight of the roadway, hang in graceful curves, creating a mesmerizing geometric pattern against the sky. Below, the partially constructed bridge deck reveals the complex steel framework that forms the skeleton of this engineering masterpiece. The unfinished state of the roadway provides a unique perspective on the bridge's internal structure, rarely seen in images of the completed span. At the base of the tower, a large floating platform is visible, likely serving as a crucial staging area for materials and workers. This platform, along with various temporary structures and cranes scattered throughout the scene, hints at the enormous logistical challenges involved in constructing such a massive structure over water. The presence of these elements reminds viewers of the human effort and ingenuity required to bring this ambitious project to fruition. The photograph not only documents a critical phase in the bridge's construction but also captures the spirit of American innovation and determination during the 1930s. Set against the dramatic expanse of San Francisco Bay, the emerging bridge stands as a testament to human ability to overcome natural obstacles through engineering prowess. This image, frozen in time, allows us to witness the birth of a structure that would go on to become a global symbol of San Francisco and a crowning achievement of 20th-century American engineering. #BOOMchallenge #history #historia #historyfacts #historical

Why Leonardo drew Vitruvian man and its relevance to construction 🎨 Leonardo and the other renaissance artists were obsessed with the idea of drawing on different disciplines to achieve greatness, and being the renaissance, they looked back in history to find inspiration. Vitruvian man was inspired by Vitruvius , the roman Architect. He wrote the 10 books of architecture where he expounded that the principles of architecture could only be realised through a combination and study of maths, music, art, as-well as construction. Vitruvius was one of the first to write about how the ideal house should function like the human body. The efficiency of the nervous system equivocates to electrics in a house, and plumbing to the veins / arteries. Bones are like structural steel or timber beams supporting the structure. In the drawing, the proportional relationship of the parts reflects the universal design. And a "medical" equilibrium of elements ensures a stable structure. Creating the ideal house therefore draws on the same universal principles. Some from the outside see construction as a dirty and unworthy industry. Nothing could be further from the truth, to make beautiful buildings requires an immense amount of creativity and cross disciplinary effort. Construction is art! 🛠️🦊 Www.Tradefoxapp.com

Another fantastic 4K time lapse showing how Earthcam can document your infrastructure and transportation projects. Reach out to me about how we can help on your next project!
Watch F.H. Paschen's complete construction of Damen Station, a rapid transit station on the Chicago "L"'s Green Line. For over a year, EarthCam documented the project, which fills a 1.5-mile service gap between Ashland and California stops, restoring rail service to the neighborhood for the first time since the original station was closed at the location in 1948. Designed by the architectural firm Perkins&Will, the $80-million station features a double-height main entrance, an artistic mural, and an elevated bridge. EarthCam captured tens of thousands of images to create this 4K time-lapse.

A well-known sculptor Constantin Brancusi's quote implies a deep connection between sculpture and architecture, emphasizing that both include the forms that have a profound impact on those who interact with them. In this sense, architecture is viewed as a sort of artistic expression that fundamentally changes the human experience of place, rather than only a pragmatic or utilitarian profession. This statement is implying that architecture, like sculpture, is an art form that shapes built with humans in mind. #architecture #architecturalquotes #architect #inspirationalquotes #architecturaldesign #ArchitecturalExcellence #interiordesigners #tranquilglobal #weeklyquotepost

Finding a Spatial Planning Icon in Tirana, Albania, was quite challenging due to the city's complex urban development history. During the communist era, Tirana saw the introduction of prefabricated urban blocks, which are now a significant part of its urban landscape. These blocks present a mixed case in terms of their "icon" status. On one hand, their construction and materials may not meet modern environmental standards, placing them in a "grey area" regarding sustainability. On the other hand, these blocks have fostered strong social cohesion among residents and provide an efficient urban layout that contributes to the neighborhood's overall functionality. It was very interesting to investigate this case as homework for the summer school at Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft in collaboration with Centre for the Just City. #urban #spatialplanning #icons #sustainability
