The problem with many barefoot-designed shoes is that the foot can often swim in a shoe that is too wide for the user which in turn forces a negative nervous system reaction: the body is faced with the problem of trying to find grip both within the shoe AND with the ground itself. This facilitates over-engagement of stabilizer muscles— an inefficient use of energy and inefficient force transfer. Cup sole construction is one of the most common footwear style pretty much since the beginning of the sneaker design culture. Half of what we call retro style sneakers are made with a cup sole construction. I remember my first Nike Air Force which I am not a big fan at all. The sole is heavy and clunky. Also the barbwire internal supporting structure will create irritation after a long period of wearing under foot. In one of client projects I have the opportunity to re-engineer a cup sole construction to increase its comfort level. I replaced the traditional barded wire supporting system with a thick layer of high density EVA foam. Also part of the outsole is constructed with a clear TPR to give it a level visual interests. This re-engineer does increase overall under foot comfort and the extra visual design interest is always a positive to catch consumer interests. #footwear #design #engineer #construction #development #abananadesign
