“There is no need to jump to dramatic conclusions" Today, we sat down with Eric Konings, Director of the NOGA | Netherlands Online Gambling Association, to dive into some hot topics. 🔥 We discussed responsible gambling, the rise of illegal markets, and what's truly driving addiction and it's not just black market operators causing concerns. ⚠️ Eric shares his pragmatic take on the industry, and trust me—you’ll want to hear what he thinks about the “ridiculously easy” access to offshore gambling sites. Curious? 👀 Read the full interview here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dSMzC-4W #Netherlands #ResponsibleGambling #iGaming #GamblingIndustry

My hot take!!! “Healthy gamblers hold the key to safer gambling success!” Day 2 here at #SBCSummit Lisbon and we are inviting people to the Better Change (Gibraltar) Ltd to share their hot takes on the industry. Back in 2019 I delivered a presentation at an event titled “Safer Gambling Tools - a consumer perspective”. In my research for the presentation I spoke to people in treatment and recovery from gambling addiction and as you can imagine their view of Safer Gambling tools where not favourable. For some they had no effect and for others they even prolonged their gambling issues. To add balance to my research I spoke to some of my old customers from my time as an operator, customers who I thought never had an issue with gambling, always stayed in control and probably had no use for safer gambling tools. But I was wrong….. I was surprised that almost all of them had methods of staying in control that I had no idea about, from writing out their bets at home to only bringing an amount of money out with them that they were happy to spend. There was so much I learned from them that I had not known when I was working in the industry and I wish I did so that I could positively re enforce those behaviours and share them with others. So there we are, I believe we should learn from healthy gamblers to help educate and support people to make informed decisions about their gambling rather than trying to shoehorn everyone into the “at risk” category to suit a political agenda and more importantly make it harder to identify those who genuinely need help. Want to change my mind or do you have a hot take yourself you’d like to share? We are at stand PP50 we’d love to hear from you. #PositivePlay #safergambling #hottake

The legends at the Grattan Institute debunk gambling industry claims (that communities would suffer if pokies were removed from clubs, for example) and call for some serious (and seriously overdue) measures to protect Australians. From this report, I learnt that pokies are more common in Australian suburbs - especially disadvantaged ones - than post boxes, ATMs, or public toilets. 😓 Australians are losing more to gambling than any other country: twice what US citizens are and three times what New Zealanders. There's no question that our government has failed to protect us from gambling harm, and there are two clear reasons why: tax revenue from gambling (the 5th largest tax base) and direct pressure from the (extremely profitable) gambling industry. It feels a little obvious to say, but, um, we really shouldn't keep on leading people to addiction and suffering just because the money is good. Time for #evidencebased #reform.
TWTR is… a subject: gambling harm minimisation ➡️ apo.org.au/subject/64771 Australia – one of the first countries to deregulate gambling – has some of the world’s weakest regulation and, as a result, the highest gambling losses. Australians lose more than $24 billion a year gambling: per adult, that’s more than twice what the average US citizen or New Zealander loses. This new report from Grattan Institute argues that the gambling industry has repeatedly used its political clout to prevent regulation, cultivating addiction and harm in millions of Australians. The authors respond to the industry’s arguments against regulation and call for definitive measures to protect Australians by reducing exposure to gambling, introducing mandatory loss limits and improving support services. On the same subject, also see: 🪙 The Ministry of Health New Zealand’s recent strategy to prevent and minimise gambling harm ➡️ apo.org.au/node/328167 🪙 You win some, you lose more ➡️ apo.org.au/node/323281 the Parliament of Australia's 2023 enquiry into online gambling harm, and 🪙 The Alliance for Gambling Reform’s 2023 online gambling policy ➡️ apo.org.au/node/322979 #evidencebased #pokies #regulation #gambling
