The number of pilgrims who died during Hajj 2024 increased by more than 300 since my last post [on Hajj] in which it was around 1000 pilgrims! Such an unfortunate incident I believe is related to wrongly practicing and participating in the Hajj partly discussed in my last post. In this one, I will focus on a few related concepts and the Hajj timings restricted by the government of Saudi Arabia to less than a week in a month [Source: https://lnkd.in/gqJfcKpE] instead of (anytime) over four (Sacred) months permitted for Hajj in the Quran thus being a major distortion. Ch 9:36. Surely the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar]……since the day when He created the heavens and the earth, of these four being sacred [Hurum in Arabic]….. Ch 2:197. Hajj shall be observed in the well-known months. Whoever sets out to observe Hajj shall refrain from carnal relations, misconduct, and arguments…… Note: The word ‘Hurum’ is the adjective from the noun ‘Ihram’ which is the state of abstinence recommended for an individual during the Hajj. The ‘Hurum Months’ are therefore the months during which ‘Ihram’ is observed. It was God who named everything so whatever names we come across were certainly inspired by God. Ch 2:31. And He (God) taught Adam all the names…... Note: Accordingly, the 12th month of the Islamic Calendar was named Dhu Al-Hijjah so people would know when Hajj has started. How do we know it’s the first month and not the last? If it was the last then the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar ‘Ramadan’ would have to be the first. Ch 2:196. And complete the Hajj and Umrah for God………..Whoever is ill or mentally afflicted then he may redeem by fasting or giving a charity…….And for those who do not find the means (for offering), then a fast of three days during the Hajj and seven when you have returned….. Note: God would not suggest fasting as an expiation method in the month of Ramadan which itself is set for fasting. Thus, Ramadan cannot be one of the four months for Hajj and Dhu Al-Hijjah cannot be the last month. Ch 9:2-5. Travel freely throughout the land [during] four months but know that you cannot escape Allah…. Then, when the sacred months have passed…. Note: In verse 2 Allah tells the polytheists to roam the land freely for four months and then verse 5 starts with when the sacred months have “passed” -'insalakha' in Arabic which means 'to skin'. When something is skinned it’s done by removing the skin from one end to the other end in a continuous motion. The figurative use of this word for the four months tells us that those months are consecutive. So, Dhu Al-Hijjah is the first month of the four sacred months which are consecutive-the 12th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd months of the Islamic Calendar: Dhu Al-Hijjah, Al-Muharram, Safar, Rabi Al-Awwal. Dying for their faith: Over 1,000 people have died during this year's hajj in Saudi Arabia, with more than half of those who died being unregistered worshippers. Hajj is the annual pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam which all Muslims with the means must complete at least once. The dates and timings of the hajj are determined by the lunar Islamic calendar. This year hajj was June 14-June 19. Earlier this week, weather agencies reported a temperature of over 51 degrees Celsius (125 F) in the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Although Saudi authorities had cleared hundreds of thousands of unregistered pilgrims for hajj, it was reported that many of them still participated in the pilgrimage without proper permits. Since unregistered pilgrims did not have access to air-conditioned areas and other facilities, they were the most susceptible to the heatwave. "People were tired after being chased by security forces before Arafat day. They were exhausted," one Arab diplomat said, referring to Saturday's day-long outdoor prayers. The Hajj is a source of prestige for Saudi Arabia’s king, who holds the title of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques as the guardian of Islam’s holiest sites. But the pilgrimage is also a significant source of revenue for the Saudi economy. Pilgrimage revenues were forecast to average about $30 billion a year and create 100,000 jobs for Saudis when the kingdom attracted around 21 million worshippers annually during the 10-day Hajj as well as the yearlong Umrah pilgrimage, according to official data cited by Reuters. The government is targeting 30 million pilgrims by 2030. https://lnkd.in/eRpHiTJa

Twenty-five years after the super-cyclone that struck coastal Odisha on October 29-30, 1999, most survivors have rebuilt their lives, overcoming challenges like official insensitivity and bureaucratic delays. The memory of the cyclone, which claimed over 12,000 lives, remains a significant part of their history, as they reflect on their losses each year. Increased awareness and training from government and non-government organizations have enhanced preparedness among coastal communities. Prasanta Haldar, orphaned by the cyclone at 15, represents this resilience; he has built a stable life through fishing, supported by the compensation of Rs 3 lakh that allowed him to save and rebuild. Sixty-two-year-old S Ramulu, a marine fisherman, emphasizes the critical importance of respecting weather warnings, highlighting that his community's vigilance has significantly improved since 1999, when over 2,000 lives were lost in Sandhakuda alone. Kendrapara Collector Smruti Ranjan Pradhan noted that preparedness now starts at the grassroots level, with active community support for evacuation during cyclone alerts. #AsiaRisk #NaturalDisasters #India Get a full accounting of the security situation in Asia by subscribing to Security Asia. During this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, hundreds of people tragically lost their lives due to intense high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom. The faithful faced scorching heat as they gathered for the annual pilgrimage, which is required of every able Muslim once in their lifetime. Saudi Arabia has not officially disclosed the death toll, but reports indicate that at least 550 people died during the five-day Hajj. The extreme temperatures, reaching up to 47 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit) in Mecca, led to fatalities among pilgrims. Communicable illnesses and preexisting health conditions may have contributed to the unusually high number of deaths this year. Several countries, including Jordan and Tunisia, reported that some of their pilgrims succumbed to the intense heat. In total, more than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, with over 1.6 million pilgrims from 22 countries participating. The tragedy underscores the challenges faced by pilgrims during this sacred journey. https://lnkd.in/gZpbb5kD

Tragedy Strikes Hajj: 550 Pilgrims Die Amid Scorching 51°C Heat in Mecca! In a devastating turn of events, at least 550 pilgrims have died during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, with temperatures soaring to a blistering 51 degrees Celsius (123.8 degrees Fahrenheit). A Saudi study indicates that climate change is exacerbating the situation, with temperatures in the area rising by 0.4 degrees Celsius each decade. Among the deceased, 323 were Egyptians, most succumbing to heat-related illnesses. The tragedy underscores the severe conditions faced by the 1.8 million pilgrims, including 1.6 million from abroad. Despite Saudi authorities advising the use of umbrellas, staying hydrated, and avoiding peak sun hours, many rituals require extended outdoor exposure, notably the prayers on Mount Arafat. Eyewitnesses described overwhelmed ambulance services and motionless bodies on roadsides. Last year saw 240 pilgrim deaths, mostly Indonesians. This year, volunteers distributed cold drinks and ice cream to combat the heat, but the measures proved insufficient against the extreme temperatures. Saudi authorities have treated over 2,000 for heat stress but have not updated fatality figures since Sunday. Egypt is collaborating with Saudi officials to locate missing nationals. The Hajj pilgrimage’s escalating dangers highlight the urgent need for better safety measures. The tragic incident that shook Dehradun on November 12th has left an indelible mark on our hearts. Six young lives were lost in a devastating collision with a truck—a moment of recklessness fueled by speed and alcohol. These were vibrant, promising individuals, gone too soon. It no longer matters who was at fault or how it unfolded; the grief and loss are unbearable. My heart aches deeply for the families and friends who must now endure this unimaginable pain. This comes not long after the heart-wrenching Porsche car accident—a grim reminder of the dangerous paths some of our youth are treading. I plead with everyone—my friends, my peers, and the younger generation: please, do not drink and drive. Better still, stay away from alcohol altogether. No fleeting thrill is worth a life, no moment of carelessness worth the sorrow that follows. Let us learn from these tragedies before more lives are shattered. Let’s take responsibility for our actions, learn from these tragedies, and commit to making better choices. Reshare this post and spread awareness. Together, we can save lives. #RoadSafety #DoNotDrinkAndDrive #YouthAwareness #SayNoToRecklessness #SaveLives #SpreadAwareness #DehradunDrinkanddrivecase #rip #besafe
