FACT: Charter Schools enroll students who need help in school and do not expel or “counsel out” students who don’t perform. Charter schools welcome students of all learning levels and do not enroll only high performing students. In the 2023-24 academic year in Rochester, 4 students were expelled and 2 students withdrew before expulsion procedures were completed. This represents less than one tenth of a percent of all charter school students. Charter schools do not “return students to the district” due to low academic performance. Thoughts: this news story broke yesterday in the DMV. What are your thought on a SRO’s being assigned to elementary schools? Is it better to add those resources to secondary level? Does/ should the school system have a say in determining where SRO’s are placed? Who is ultimately responsible for school safety? LE or the school system? While this is local issue at this point, it seems law enforcement in some jurisdictions want to be more hands on in school security. How do school systems/ school safety professionals/ supers proactively deal with these politically charged debates? This type of disagreement doesn’t seem good for anyone. Do you know one key factor to student academic achievement despite their socieconomic status, background, or the school they attend: PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT. That’s right. Parents. Creating a home environment that encourages learning, reading to your kids, attending parent teacher conferences, volunteering at their school, and setting the expectation for high achievement. Sounds simple? Not for many parents who have to overcome so many obstacles: many are struggling to put food on the table and a roof over their family’s head; immigrant families who are not familiar with the US school system, do not speak the language, lack transportation and have to choose spending money to get to work over visiting the school, working long hours with no flexibility to leave their work place to attend conferences or volunteer during school hours, and for some parents, they did not graduate from high school, some not completing past 9th grade or lower. In the equation of academic success, parents are often underestimated or completely left out and overlooked. BUT, PARENTS NEED CHAMPIONS. PARENTS need a support system. When parents have support, their children benefit, their family benefits, their multigenerational household benefits, it transforms generations. The Concilio’s Parents Advocating for Student Excellence (PASE) equips families with the tools they need to help their children succeed. I’m so proud of the hundreds and thousands of parents who have invested in their children’s education and future by graduating from PASE. Congratulations to all the parents!!!! Become a champion for student success by championing their parents.
Congratulations to our 101 graduates who have finished our LENA and PASE programs! 🎓 31 LENA graduates from Anne Frank Elementary School LENA is our program that teaches parents how to have more conversations with their young children to help them with language development. 🎓 28 PASE graduates from Inspired Vision Elementary School 🎓 42 PASE graduates from A+ Academy Elementary School PASE is our 9-week program that shows parents how to understand academic and graduation requirements so they can take an active role in their child’s academic success.
