What has 2024 shown us? Energy prices in the UK have fallen since summer 2023, but are still be well above pre-'energy crisis' levels and there is little prospect of large cuts to bills in the near future. This has impacted the conversation around the importance of energy sovereignty significantly. For the UK to control and manage our energy resources and policies independently, we need to rewire an entire industry and make clean energy accessible and scalable as quickly as possible. www.brambleenergy.com #hydrogen #netzero #solutions #cleanenergytechnology #scalable #accessible #mission #vision #values #innovation

The subject of energy is a hotly debated topic in this election campaign. One of the key points of difference is the Labour Party (UK)'s proposal to introduce a publicly owned energy company. Earlier this year we undertook a Policy Commission looking at the pros and cons of a publicly owned energy company, interviewing numerous leaders from industry, academia and the public sector. One of the key recommendations from the report is that to be successful a 'Net-Zero Delivery Unit' needs to be established, with the power to sit at the very top of government. It should have oversight of net-zero activities in regional and local authorities, Ofgem, National Grid, and indeed GB Energy itself. To have any chance of achieving net zero by 2050 requires fundamental reform at the top of government. This is a very timely report. Key #findings: 1. Britain, which likes to proclaim itself a leader on #netzero, is badly behind on several fronts such as transport and domestic heat. 2. State #investment in early-stage technologies is important over the longer term but irrelevant to achieving net zero targets in 2030 and 2035. 3. State investment in strategic infrastructure is vital. 4. A publicly owned energy company could be extremely effective at tightly focused challenges such as Labour’s Local Power Plan (LPP) and Local Area Energy Planning (LAEP, currently absent from Labour’s published plans). 5. Public or private ownership, however, is not the most important factor in achieving either net zero or social equity. 6. Labour’s reliance on the example of various European energy ‘champions’ is a weakness in its argument. 7. In any event, the overwhelming bulk of renewables capacity to 2035 will be built by private developers and the heavy lifting will be done by offshore wind. 8. Decarbonisation of home heating is vital but best pursued through public programmes – as Labour plans – rather than a state-owned energy company. 9. With or without a nationally owned energy company, an #industrialstrategy aligned with net zero is vital. 10. Net zero #2050 and net zero grid #2030/35 are impossible to achieve without reforms to planning, grid connection and market arrangements. 11. None of this will happen in time without fundamental reform at the top of government, hence our proposal for a net zero #deliverybody. Some #thoughts: #Point 1: In terms of #governance, the key of the keys is who will have the authority to deliver it in long-term. #Point 2: In terms of technology #priority, both onshore and offshore energy transmission technologies would be the key: No transmission, no energy transition. #Point 3: In terms of energy technology #innovation, very significant energy infrastructure investment and R&D fund are expected to support world class universities and research centres.

The UK's energy market faces inertia challenges as decarbonisation speeds up. Flexibility through battery storage and demand response is vital for decarbonisation. Overcoming inertia requires progressive funding mechanisms, smart metering infrastructure, and addressing opt-in resistance. Current uniform pricing fails to accurately reflect dynamic constraints. Enhanced locational pricing, carbon prices, and geo-technologically specific incentives are essential for a sustainable transition. I explore how the UK is and could be balancing momentum and inertia for a competitive and equitable energy future. You can read more on Medium - it will only take 8 minutes. Many thanks to Tom Ross, Kate Mulvany and James Phillips for their support in the process. (Views are my own and not theirs). #REMA #ElectricityMarkets #Zonal #ERCOT #Sustainability

The deadline for the Review of Energy Market Arrangements (REMA) response may now seem like a distant memory for some. And despite of election uncertainty it's important we don't lose momentum. Here is a summary of our response from Madelaine Brooks & me: 🎯 We remain fully committed to zonal pricing. None of the alternatives work as well. Those that seem 'light touch' are anything but. ✊ Revolution not evolution. Piecemeal change is not enough. Existing market governance means that even small changes take ages, and they will create more uncertainty than a clear strategic direction from Gov. ☀ It's time for renewables to be exposed to market forces; they are a mature asset class now. A capacity based support mechanism will improve incentives for storage and other flexible capacity, and reduce system costs. 🛢 The Capacity Market is totally broken and needs an overhaul once we've fixed the wholesale market. It is not good value for consumers, it is not net zero compatible and it does not help keep the lights on. https://lnkd.in/eE26-7u5
Zonal pricing is needed for an efficient and reliable net zero power system

🔌🐑 A plug for a plug, if you will! 📺 A busy month in the #content world, with a fresh TV ad to get your eyes on and a new episode of my series ‘Behind the Grid’ just around the corner! It’s been a pleasure to lead on getting the social comms moving for the TV campaign, have you seen it yet? What are you waiting for! A really solid team effort to get this over the line, massive kudos to Lyndsey Evans and Kathryn Dalgleish for herding the team in the right direction throughout. 📚 In other news I’ve got my head back in the textbooks again and will be soon finish the #learning section of the National Grid Future Leader’s programme and have just started the WiNG ERG Navigator programme over the next 4 months. A lot of learning, but in periods of transition, you can’t change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails. Yesterday I joined a cohort of colleagues for our first session, where we heard from the ever-excellent Philip Sandy about his career journey so far. The Future Leader’s programme has been massively valuable, equipping me with the tools for the future, regardless of what it brings. 🚀 It won’t be a surprise to anyone, but I’ve got some exciting plans in my locker. The last 4 months have seen us nearly triple our YouTube subscribers off the back of a renewed focus on stellar long-form content. With more resource, some hard work and a sprinkling of luck, we’ll be at the top of the game. The #value of YouTube just keeps on giving, with higher watch times and a larger audience than any other channel, it’s a huge opportunity for growth. Keep your eyes peeled, this is just the beginning.

I honestly think the clean energy industry will be fine. Regardless of who won the election or how they think. There is too much doom and gloom about the energy transition since the results came in, and I disagree. It's all unnecessary political drama. ↳ The US clean energy industry is more financially self-sustaining than ever. ↳ Clean energy demand is global and no one man can derail this. ↳ Investments have been made, and there is a lot of money on the line. ↳ The sector is globally competitive and the US is well-positioned to win the energy transition race. ↳ Clean energy is a win-win situation for the US if things are just left alone to thrive as they are now. Instead of worrying about who's in charge, we should focus on our role in the energy transition these 4 years. Everything else seems like a cheap excuse to give up. P.S. What do YOU think? (Please keep it civil!)
