The subject of energy is a hotly debated topic in this election campaign. One of the key points of difference is the Labour Party (UK)'s proposal to introduce a publicly owned energy company. Earlier this year we undertook a Policy Commission looking at the pros and cons of a publicly owned energy company, interviewing numerous leaders from industry, academia and the public sector. One of the key recommendations from the report is that to be successful a 'Net-Zero Delivery Unit' needs to be established, with the power to sit at the very top of government. It should have oversight of net-zero activities in regional and local authorities, Ofgem, National Grid, and indeed GB Energy itself. To have any chance of achieving net zero by 2050 requires fundamental reform at the top of government. This is a very timely report. Key #findings: 1. Britain, which likes to proclaim itself a leader on #netzero, is badly behind on several fronts such as transport and domestic heat. 2. State #investment in early-stage technologies is important over the longer term but irrelevant to achieving net zero targets in 2030 and 2035. 3. State investment in strategic infrastructure is vital. 4. A publicly owned energy company could be extremely effective at tightly focused challenges such as Labour’s Local Power Plan (LPP) and Local Area Energy Planning (LAEP, currently absent from Labour’s published plans). 5. Public or private ownership, however, is not the most important factor in achieving either net zero or social equity. 6. Labour’s reliance on the example of various European energy ‘champions’ is a weakness in its argument. 7. In any event, the overwhelming bulk of renewables capacity to 2035 will be built by private developers and the heavy lifting will be done by offshore wind. 8. Decarbonisation of home heating is vital but best pursued through public programmes – as Labour plans – rather than a state-owned energy company. 9. With or without a nationally owned energy company, an #industrialstrategy aligned with net zero is vital. 10. Net zero #2050 and net zero grid #2030/35 are impossible to achieve without reforms to planning, grid connection and market arrangements. 11. None of this will happen in time without fundamental reform at the top of government, hence our proposal for a net zero #deliverybody. Some #thoughts: #Point 1: In terms of #governance, the key of the keys is who will have the authority to deliver it in long-term. #Point 2: In terms of technology #priority, both onshore and offshore energy transmission technologies would be the key: No transmission, no energy transition. #Point 3: In terms of energy technology #innovation, very significant energy infrastructure investment and R&D fund are expected to support world class universities and research centres.

Green 'flash' registraion plate and government sponsored greenwashing. The latest green ‘flash’ registration plate scheme for motorists being promoted by Green Party Minister Eamon Ryan is yet another state sponsored green flag for greenwashing. (Green ‘flash’ registration plates for motorists on Irish roads with zero emission vehicles. Environment, November 4th, 2024) To be eligible for this scheme, vehicles must emit zero emissions at the tailpipe. However, while it is true that all electric vehicles (EVs) are emission free at the tail pipe, except for those with home solar charging facilities, all other EVs are charged from the national grid. The national grid generates electricity composed of a mixture of oil, natural gas, imports from Britain (including nuclear), renewables and hydro. Because of prolonged and severely becalmed weather currently and over the last number of weeks, the average daily wind energy generated by wind is of the order of 10 per cent of demand or around 5 GWh. The result is that over 90 per cent of electricity from the grid is being made up of a mix of fossil fuels and imports (smartgriddashboard.com) It is disingenuous therefore, as well as blatant state greenwashing, to promote a scheme that misleadingly claims that EVs are emissions free, when patently they are not, because they are charged from the grid largely fuelled by oil, natural gas and imports. This is similar to that other state sponsored scheme where retail electricity suppliers are allowed by the Commission of Regulation of Utilities, by using debased offsets, to boast that they generate and supply 100 per cent Green Energy to their customers’ homes and businesses. Another fine example of state sponsored greenwashing. Micheál Martin Eamon Ryan Hannah Daly Green Party of Ireland / Comhaontas Glas Friends of the Earth Simon Harris Lisa Leahy

With abundant fuel supplies in the past, countries could focus their efforts on increasing the share of cleaner fuel in their energy mix to cut emissions. However, with supply threats and price increases due to the ongoing regional conflicts, the scramble to secure affordable and reliable energy could imperil climate action. While the states strive to ensure uninterrupted energy supply for themselves, it is also an opportune time to build capacity around renewable energy/clean energy sources to reduce dependence on oil and gas and to achieve energy security in the real sense. I share my thoughts on the need to achieve energy transition without compromising on energy security, in an article titled : Energy Transition And Energy Security – A Balancing Act, published in Mondaq. What is this tosh? The literal purpose of the Capacity Market was to incentivise new build gas-fired generation. It was pretty bad at doing that, but re-announcing the original purpose of a mechanism 10 years on is a strange way of advancing energy policy. Ditto the requirement to shift to hydrogen-firing or a carbon capture retrofit - these have both been the quid pro quo for gas-fired generation in a #decabonised grid. The PM talked about making "tough decisions so that no matter what scenario we face, we can always power Britain from Britain", but this is neither tough nor a decision. #netzero #energytransition #decarbonisation https://lnkd.in/eezqVNhz

What has 2024 shown us? Energy prices in the UK have fallen since summer 2023, but are still be well above pre-'energy crisis' levels and there is little prospect of large cuts to bills in the near future. This has impacted the conversation around the importance of energy sovereignty significantly. For the UK to control and manage our energy resources and policies independently, we need to rewire an entire industry and make clean energy accessible and scalable as quickly as possible. www.brambleenergy.com #hydrogen #netzero #solutions #cleanenergytechnology #scalable #accessible #mission #vision #values #innovation

Now Invest in Build Fusion energy generators Your talk is Nuclear (meaning only Fission) and fails to talk about fusion. https://lnkd.in/ge_aeX7M The nuclear fission industry is, ignorant of what's happening around you. Pull your uranium heads out, start adjusting your industry to fusion energy and start preparing to enter the commercially growing fusion energy industry. As it dawns on Earth like the sun. Great Headline Guardian on Nuclear fission. https://lnkd.in/g8sMZtpR Fission is moving towards obsolescence at an accelerated pace, as it is "out of step, out of time, out of place," and merely a temporary industry globally. https://lnkd.in/gbd_mZqk Commercial fusion electrical generation is a promising and innovative method of producing sustainable and clean energy. By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft. The plant will produce at least 50 MWe after an initial ramp-up period. https://lnkd.in/gY9J3MQY Now see what news is happening in the Fusion industry in the world. https://lnkd.in/g9hMBD7a As fission trebles, fission fuel shortage is increasingly real, as linked below. https://lnkd.in/gze5rwpr

This should surprise no one: Probably a lot of wasted money... @FT - @EUauditors concludes that EU Commission “did not undertake robust analyses” before setting targets totalling 20m tons of #renewable #hydrogen by 2030. EU is unlikely to meet ‘overly ambitious’ goals for clean fuel despite €18.8B in funding. #energy #power #electricity #proepectresources

Electric power generation in the U.S. is shifting rapidly away from fossil fuels toward cleaner and lower-carbon sources. State clean energy targets and dramatic declines in the cost of renewable electricity are the most important reasons. 📖 https://bit.ly/4bVJKbF #environmentallaw #environmentallawyer #newportri #desautelbrowninglaw
