💻 The Great Debate: Work from Home, Office-Based, or Hybrid? 💻 There's been a lot of discussion around where we work best, but for me, it’s a no-brainer: the office wins every time. Working from home just doesn’t do it for me. I find it hard to stay focused, the internet is dodgy, and honestly, I miss that clear divide between work and home life. The office isn’t just a place to get tasks done; it’s my dedicated space to dive into work, connect with my team, and stay motivated. Being in the office creates that healthy split I need. It also means my lovely clients never have to wonder if I’m available or where I’m working from—I’m here, in my happy place, ready to support them. And if I’m “bringing work home,” it’s a conscious choice, a mindful decision rather than a default. I can appreciate the benefits others might see in remote or hybrid setups, but for me, having a place that’s just for work is invaluable. Anyone else feel the same? 🗣 Have a look at my office and then we can talk about the Pro’s and Con’s of Working from Home 🏡 😁 There's been so much discussion about this, and for me, one of the deciding factors in becoming a full time self-employed Virtual Assistant was the enforcement of a return to the office. So, let me tell you about the things I don't miss. ❌ The hot, smelly unreliable and LONG commute to London 🚉 ❌ The office distractions - a stuffy room full of people eating crisps and apples is NOT good for Misophonia 🍏🙉 ❌ The expense - trains, parking, coffee, lunch 💸💸 Working from home does not make me less able to provide a great Virtual Assistant service to my clients, instead it gives me flexibility, better focus and greater productivity, and on a personal level, I am also less stressed, have fewer expenses and a better work-life balance. 𝗠𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗸 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 (𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟯 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲) ⤵️ Imagine this: I arrive on the first day of a new job excited to get started. I'm dressed in my best corporate outfit. I'm taken on a tour of the office that ends at my new desk... ...which is just outside the men's room. Huh. Not what I expected. But I sat down and got to work. Today, my desk is in a teeny tiny room that serves as both my closet and my office. I refer to it affectionately as my "cloffice." And it's absolutely lovely. I've been working remotely for over a decade at this point. Here are 3 ways to make it awesome (and I promise this isn't the same trite advice everyone else is giving you): 1. Establish your workspace You're supposed to designate a specific area for work that sets the tone for productivity, reduces distractions and helps segregate professional tasks from personal activities. I don't do that. Instead, my cloffice intermingles everything. Clothes, computers, kids...all the things I need are right at my fingertips. It's personalized, pretty and full of things I enjoy. 2. Structure Your Day You're supposed to set a structured schedule that mimics the office environment, fostering discipline. I don't do that either. I do have a routine for each day, but it doesn't look anything like an office environment! Instead, I wake up, work, kids to school, work, Pilates class, work, kids from school, kids to sports, work, dinner, work and go to bed. It's a consistent routine that serves me, my family and my employer. 3. Leveraged Technology You're supposed to embrace the right technological tools to transform your home into a virtual office. Instead, I use technology to transform any place I happen to be into a virtual office. The car, the gym, the porch, Costa Rica—and yes, also the cloffice—are all places I can be found working. Like a boss. It's convenient, seamless and no one knows—or cares, for that matter. My best advice for working from home: Don't be constrained by typical work advice. “Where's your office?” Oh, I get this one a lot. A. LOT. My go-to response? “Wherever I am, that’s my office-of-the-moment.” But for some reason, people seem to think I'm either being snarky or need to take ‘Work-Life Balance 101’ (spoiler alert: I’ve heard of it, but have yet to see the syllabus, let alone earn my doctorate). Truth is, I genuinely love what I do, so the line between Work and Life is more like a smudge.
