My algo throws up a lot of career coach content. And anger (from those out of work). Having been steady in this since 2008, I've noticed a growing but depressing pattern: The least-informed content usually has BAIT-type openers that are labelled as 'seismic' or a 'wake-up call'. 🪝 It often sounds absolute: 'recruiters must STOP this', 'resumes should NEVER...', 🪝 'most interviewing is COMPLETELY wrong', 🪝'this is the ONE thing you need to do', 🪝etc. It's hyperbole. Hyperbole with cookie-cutter templates! One-size prototypes that worked in the coach's own prior industry or function, not necessarily others. 📢 Like declaring that all recruitment arises from unsolicited approaches and networking (🤥 nonsense: HRM often prohibit it outside of their channels and processes, to be policy-compliant). 📢 Like declaring that CVs should have bios or shouldn't; or should be contained within two pages, or needn't. Or should be chronological or functional. (🤥 There is no single correct way - it depends on many factors). 📢 Like declaring that there is just a single best way to answer a motivation question or a biographic experience-mapping question. (🤥 There are many ways depending on context). 📢 Like declaring that everything is wrong and everything must change, right now (🤥 throw-out-the-baby-with-the-bathwater thinking is lethal - it naively neglects all the fine-tuning that talent assessment has done through the decades). Basic hyperbole. To hook and reel you in. 🪝 The hard truth is that life (including talent acquisition, talent management, recruitment and selection processes, interview and other assessment instruments) is endlessly COMPLEX. It's nuanced. It's contextual. It differs widely. It differs across: ☝ organisational levels, ☝ business functions, ☝ organisation cultures, ☝ industries, ☝ sectors, ☝ geographic regions. It's subtle, deep and hard to define. It differs across: ☝ personality types of HR and hiring managers, ☝ their training and experience in such processes, ☝ organisational maturity in framing ownership, leadership, etc. Guidance should draw on thousands of different client experiences, not be a one-size-fits-all. Content that has some pretty individual half your age animatedly spouting a video rampage of ABSOLUTES on how to do things ... may be worth taking with a pinch of salt 😉... and of course some gratitude for their intentions and effort. They are trying to help. But it should not be taken as gospel. Short singular snappy soundbites rarely make for deep solutions. My experience from one year at managing Desvelado Advisory wrt Team building in person Talent shortage is often misunderstood. It’s not about the lack of certificates or experience; it’s about avoiding the hard work required to truly excel. From personal experience at Desvelado, we’ve learned that people are our most valuable asset. Developing this asset requires time, investment, and patience. The payoff, however, can be exponential over time. But here's the truth: not all individuals are the same. A key pillar of our hiring strategy is assessing a candidate’s openness to learning. Lack of knowledge isn’t a deal-breaker. What matters is the willingness to put in the effort and demonstrate rational thinking. It’s like writing on a blank sheet of paper—it’s much easier to start fresh than to rewrite over misconceptions and stubborn habits. Some may think they’re smarter than others, and perhaps they are. But academic success doesn’t always translate into practical expertise. We’ve seen this firsthand when those with perfect scores struggle to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Despite this, we’ve provided ample opportunities for growth, emphasizing learning over knowing. Unfortunately, many resist continuous learning, even when they recognize its absence in their skillset. 🇬🇧 Several years ago, as part of a self-reflection exercise, I asked 3 simple questions to more than a dozen of people in my work and personal circles (all people who know me well). The last question was: “For what reasons (or services) would you come to me, rather than someone else?”. Among the answers were: ▪“Sort out a complex problem requiring creativity” ▪“Reflect together on solutions to emotional / professional / relationship problems” ▪“Discuss a start-up project / project launch / business plan / business development issue” ▪“Discuss without judgement and in confidence” ▪“Help me organise my thoughts and come up with ideas to find solutions to a problem (you have a thousand ideas a minute)” ▪“Get me motivated again: You are full of energy, you are positive and you know how to play things down with a laugh, so it feels good and lifts my spirits” ▪“Fast-paced demanding and creative jobs in international settings” ▪“You would work well with an A team, high-level and top pressure environments.
