This post is about two initiatives to get school choice dollars to follow the student (including homeschool and private schools, faith-based and secular) in Oregon. They have 60 days to gather 130,000 signatures to get it on the ballot. The initiatives are in phase 3. If it doesn't get on the ballot this time, they have to start all over again and it will be another couple of years before we get the chance again. It would be a miracle, for sure, but who doesn't want to be a part of a miracle? A year ago, I learned about this initiative but hesitated to get involved because I thought it was a very one-sided political endeavor. Now, I feel differently and I'm urging you to take a closer look as well. If you'd like to sign but don't want to figure out how to print, sign, and send, let me know. I will arrange to get you an opportunity to sign a group sheet. The issue of School Choice Funds sparks intense debate, raising questions about the use of public school funds. It's a significant conversation, and if these initiatives make it to the ballot, I'll prioritize facilitating discussions. I was hesitant, as many independent homeschoolers may also be because I hear the saying, "Government funds = government strings." Concerns about government control over funding are valid, but these initiatives offer a unique approach, placing power directly in the hands of parents. Unlike other states, this approach aims to eliminate government influence over funds. Options for Education values school choice for ALL, advocating for every parent's right to choose the best educational path for their children. While I've refrained from involving political groups in our events to respect diverse viewpoints, I firmly believe that these initiatives benefit all Oregonians, irrespective of political affiliations. Donna Kreitzberg, the volunteer attorney behind these initiatives, is tirelessly rallying support to give Oregon parents a voice. While many volunteers are motivated by a desire for faith-based education, bipartisan support is crucial for progress. I urge my liberal friends to consider, engage, and hopefully support this initiative so that we all have the opportunity to vote. __________________________________________________ From Donna: Please check out LetThemLearnOregon.com to learn about two education measures that will enable families to afford choice in their children’s education. The Open Enrollment and School Choice measures will give all Oregon students access to the school setting that meets their learning needs. There are 60 days left to gather enough petition signatures to put the two measures on the Nov ballot to be voted on by all Oregon voters. Education reform is moving quickly.💨 As Georgia moves forward with implementing a school voucher program offering up to $6,500 for private school tuition or homeschooling, there are both opportunities and challenges to consider. On one hand, this program could provide families, particularly in underserved communities, with the resources to access educational options that may better suit their children’s needs. On the other, it raises concerns about diverting critical funding from public schools—especially at a time when many are already facing financial challenges. This is a pivotal moment in education reform. As educators and professionals in the field, how can we balance the push for school choice with the need to strengthen our public education system? I am curious to hear all perspectives Alt: FILE - Tashiya Umoja M'kanga, of Atlanta, right, instructs students during a math lesson at the Kilombo Academic and Cultural Institute, March 28, 2023, in Decatur, Ga. Recently, I was working on a project and came across the fee structure for primary school kids. Shocking, 2 lakhs! 😱And I stop and wonder, are we moving into a world that makes giving my future kids quality education really an expensive proposition from the very beginning? I do know that schools offer high-end facilities, tech-integrated classrooms, and every extracurricular activity. 📚However, most parents question whether the money is justified for that high price. How far should this go? Is quality education becoming a privilege for just a few? This is a conversation the community needs to have. Are we setting right priorities in education, or should we look for ways of making quality schooling accessible to all families?💭 What do you think about that? Are the fees appropriate, or is it high time to think about what early education really needs? #EducationCosts #PrimarySchoolFees #ParentingConcerns #AccessibleEducation #FutureOfEducation #QualityEducation #EducationForAll #RisingCosts #SchoolFees #EarlyEducation #CommunityConversation #AffordableEducation #ParentVoices #EducationSystem

A fantastic article on school choice! If you’re on the fence, I highly recommend adding this to the list of work you’re exploring. “School choice is the path to entitlement reform, not expansion.”

Yesterday, the Biden administration released its FY 2025 discretionary budget request and proposed $1.3 billion for afterschool and summer programs funded through the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers—level with FY 2023. While the lack of a proposed increase for 21st CCLC comes amidst record unmet demand for afterschool programs and increasing program costs, there are a few bright spots: $200M increase for Title I Grants to Local Education Agencies; $8B to create the Academic Acceleration and Achievement Grant program; $5M increase for the Youth Mentoring Initiative; and more! https://lnkd.in/ekFamypu
