❗ Action Alert ❗ The Bowser administration is about to terminate the housing subsidy of 2,000 families for hitting a new, strict time limit in rapid re-housing—to “right-size” the program. You can learn more about what is happening: https://lnkd.in/eJeuWJ7d Virtually none of these families will be able to afford the rent after being terminated, and will face eviction and a likely return to homelessness. There isn’t enough eviction prevention $$ or family shelter to provide a safety net for these families after such a mass displacement. Here are a few ways you can help stop this harm to DC residents: ✅ Send a one-click email to the Council: https://lnkd.in/eivyhJS4 ✅ If you testify at the budget hearing on 5/3 or speak with Councilmembers or staff, raise this issue as a priority ✅ Share the email action with your networks

🏠 Are you a landlord or letting agent with spare property/rooms? Facing homelessness is a worrying experience for anyone, so we’re appealing to private sector landlords and letting agents, so we can continue to offer vital housing support to those most vulnerable. We can offer support for landlords to help house households who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. Currently, all types of accommodation are needed. Landlords will be offered cash incentives and extensive support for them and their tenants, in exchange for letting to residents who are at risk of homelessness or who are ready to move on from homelessness services and live independently. Support includes:- ✅ financial help to pay towards deposits and rent in advance, which is paid to landlords directly ✅ tenants support and advice to help ensure that tenancies are sustainable ✅ providing specialist advice on tenancy matters and changes in the law ✅ help to resolve disputes if they arise ✅ providing a named point of contact from the start We liked to say a huge thank you for those landlords who have already come forward to offer their properties to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. People trying to attain housing after an experience of homelessness face many barriers— past rental and utility debt, strict background check requirements, a lack of funds for all the upfront costs of a new lease and so many more. The City of Austin’s Homeless Strategy Office is currently seeking providers to set up two new programs aimed at increasing housing opportunities for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. $1.5 million is set aside to establish a community fund that will directly reduce barriers to housing for individuals and households. $600,000 is set aside for the development of an engagement and training program aimed to improve relationships between landlords, property management companies and Austin’s Homeless Response System; and in doing so, increase the availability of housing for people exiting homelessness in our community. And they’re back. Of course I don’t know if these are the same people I posted about in April sleeping rough in central Norwich. Data on repeat homelessness is messy and like much homelessness data, underestimates the scale of the problem. But why wouldn't we see repeat homelessness when? 💡 the average LHA (Local Housing Allowance) in Norwich for a one-bed in the private rented sector is £589 a month and the average rent for a one-bed is a whopping £930 💡over 1000 people in Norfolk are in Temporary Accommodation. Sometimes people have just had enough of ‘living’ in a single hotel room with their kids, to say nothing of the strain this puts on already strained relationships 💡 half the people in supported housing are ready to move in, but stuck. Stuck by the lack of affordable move-on options. So when a mate offers them the couch, they take it. Until it breaks down and they’re back on the streets and the cycle starts again. 💡 policy. Housing and homelessness policy. Whether that’s allocations, priority need or local connection. I really do get the need for a set of rules that allow the local authority to effectively ration a very limited resource (social housing). But increasingly opaquely communicated rules alongside the literacy levels (including digital literacy) required to navigate them is excluding people before they’ve even approached the front door. #housing #homelessness #roughsleeping #summer #norwich #finecity #hope #localauthority #education #awareness

For part three of our homelessness series we explain how local housing costs cause homelessness, why solutions to homelessness should be funded from a land value tax, and the merits of redistributing land values through a universal basic income. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eSY5fgCs

If we want to close the housing gap for First Nations peoples in the future, we need to lay a strong foundation now. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples know what is best for their communities, which is why we consulted with more than 300 people and organisations to create the Our Place Roadmap and Action Plan. Based on this consultation, we have five outcome areas to focus on: - Creating First Nations housing outcomes that are guided by First Nations leadership and shared decision-making. - Growing a stronger sector that delivers these outcomes. - Making sure that housing and homelessness support services are fair, reliable, accessible, and culturally safe. - Delivering housing supply solutions that are more culturally responsive. - Increasing access to private market rental and home ownership opportunities. There’s a lot of work to be done. You can find out more about our plan here 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/geWHBRXZ If you or someone you know needs housing help, you can call 13 QGOV (13 74 68) or contact your local Housing Service Centre during business hours 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/giyr5fwg If you are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness, contact the Homeless Hotline for free on 1800 474 753 (24/7). Our National Homelessness Property Fund 2 works hard to break the cycle of homelessness that over 100,000 people experience in the UK. Homelessness takes a toll on both physical and mental well-being, this can make moving forward difficult, and almost impossible without a safe home. We have recently finished refurbishing a property for the fund’s housing partner, Response. The home will provide tenants with the stability they need to heal, plan their futures, find employment, and engage with their community. Kim, a tenant, beautifully expresses the impact of having a home: “I never truly understood the meaning of having my own place. A place of family, joy and happiness. Response has given me a home with a new beginning and new memories. Having a home is the best feeling ever, I have a safe, secure home where I feel protected. A home I can come back to every day, a home where I can just be me.” To see what the recently refurbished property looks like, watch our video of the property, here: https://ow.ly/3Cyg50QEQHP #EndHomelessness #SafeHome #UKHousing #HomelessSupport #MentalWellBeing #NewBeginnings
