Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting several talented individuals at the "Your Career in Oslo" event who could be part of the solution—if we simply make an effort to give them the opportunity they deserve. This initiative was specifically designed for internationals seeking job opportunities in Oslo, and several “Insiders” were invited to contribute during the speed-networking sessions. 🌟Yesterday, IHL had the pleasure of attending an insightful event at VDAB, focusing on international labor migration and the processes for hiring talent from outside the EU. 💡One key takeaway was the importance of making the most of the “waiting room” period while the single permit is being processed (which can take a few months). Instead of viewing this time as downtime, businesses and new recruits can use it proactively: 🔹New hires can start learning Dutch online or familiarizing themselves with Belgian culture. 🔹Teams can begin planning how to best support their new international colleague. 🔹Partners and families can start exploring job opportunities or school options in Belgium. 💡Some helpful tips from the panel discussion included: 🔹If your company is new to hiring internationals, involve the team early through an intake process so they feel engaged and can voice any concerns or ideas. 🔹Look beyond technical skills in recruitment. Consider communication, values, and other soft skills to help your new hire integrate successfully. 🔹Evaluate the Dutch language requirement realistically. Often, it’s not about fluency but about finding someone eager to learn. 🔹Seek support from partner organizations, especially if it’s your first time hiring internationally (IHL can help if you’re in the Leuven region!). 🔹Think of hiring international talent as a long-term investment.
