Earlier this year, I was interviewed by Geoff Micks from Executive Platforms about the priorities of World Economic Forum’s Advanced Manufacturing & Supply Chain (AMSC) Center and my role as an Executive Fellow. We highlighted 5 key areas that reflect notable shifts in modern mfg. & supply chains. 🔷 TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION ⚙ The impact of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) extends beyond cost & productivity. It enables faster time to market, personalized products, increased agility, resilience & sustainability. It also strengthens human capabilities through eg: 1️⃣ Blurring human-machine interfaces eg. smart workstations, AR/VR for maintenance, intuitive UI/UX, cobots 2️⃣ Simplified access to knowledge via chatbots & gen AI 3️⃣ Automation of repetitive tasks eg. smart vision systems and advanced dynamic simulations with digital twins 🔷 HUMAN-CENTRIC INDUSTRIES 👨🏭 👩🏭 👨💼 👩💼 A shift from product/process focus to a human-centric approach is vital for I4.0 success. Going digital isn't enough, people make the difference. Innovations should enhance workforce experiences. Strategies include: 1️⃣ As expectations evolve, people always want to feel valued, rewarded & impactful 2️⃣ Build connected workers, leveraging I4.0 3️⃣ Invest in growth & upskilling to boost engagement & address skill gaps 4️⃣ Adapt to new values prioritized by younger generations, such as purpose, sustainability, work-life balance 🔷 SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS 🍀 Companies are moving from sustainability intentions to concrete actions focusing on: 1️⃣ Decarbonization/net zero, waste & plastics reduction, sustainable materials 2️⃣ Implementing circular economy strategies with suppliers & customers 3️⃣ Addressing internal (scope 1&2) & external (scope 3) sustainability impacts 🔷 RESILIENT VALUE CHAINS ⛓ The pandemic exposed supply chain vulnerabilities, prompting a focus on resilience. The term “future-proofing” is emerging. Companies are adopting a proactive risk management approach, addressing various risks (operational, geopolitical, climate, cybersecurity etc) simultaneously. Building supply chain resilience involves: 1️⃣ Enhancing real-time visibility into vulnerabilities across value chains 2️⃣ Data-driven & digital enabled risk identification & mitigation strategies incl. backup manufacturing, dual sourcing, strategic inventories, multi-skilling the workforce 🔷 COLLABORATION 🤝 New business models are emerging, transforming supply chains into interconnected networks. This change requires supply chain leaders to act as end-to-end orchestrators, focusing on holistic collaboration rather than merely managing their own operations.
