At Brisbane Youth Service, we are dedicated to breaking the cycle of violence and homelessness by providing tailored support for young parents. We support them to regain control of their lives and create safe, nurturing environments for themselves and their children. Our K.I.N.D program offers youth-specific, one-on-one interventions for young people who use violence. This trauma-informed program recognises that many of the participants have also experienced violence in their own lives. By providing a safe space for healing and growth, we support them to develop emotional regulation skills, improve communication and learn healthy coping strategies to break the cycle of violence. Join us during the #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence and help build communities where young women, and all young people, are safe and equal. It all starts with respect. #NewFutures #16Days #EndGenderBasedViolence

As part of our #16DaysofActivism against gender-based violence campaign, we’re proud to showcase the transformative impact of our Housing First projects in Camden and Westminster. Since 2019, we’ve provided safe and secure homes for six survivors of domestic abuse. These women, who’ve endured long-term homelessness and faced significant challenges – such as domestic violence, mental health issues and substance dependencies – now have the stability they need to rebuild their lives. Take Jane* for example. After years of instability, she is living independently, decorating her home, and thriving with a secure tenancy. What sets Housing First apart? Choice: Women select their homes, ensuring a match that feels right for them. No conditions: A safe home is provided unconditionally—no requirement to leave an abuser or be free from substance use. Holistic support: Seamless collaboration between housing and support services has driven an incredible 92% tenancy sustainment rate. *Not real name

Youth who identify as LGBTQIA2S+ face unique challenges, often systemic, that can lead to homelessness or make them feel left with no other choice but to running away for their safety and well-being. Understanding these challenges and knowing how to provide support can make a significant difference in their lives. Today, on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we want to recognise that while our Outreach Team assists rough sleepers to enter accommodation, they also support women who find themselves in precarious situations while rough sleeping. The team have encountered cases where women have ended up on the streets when escaping domestic abuse or have entered abusive relationships while rough sleeping out of fear of bedding down alone. Domestic abuse can involve sexual and physical violence, both of which are key factors that can contribute to women ending up homeless. These experiences highlight the complex, painful realities that many women face, and our Outreach Team deal with critical and challenging work like this every day, ensuring the safety, dignity, and support for those most vulnerable. Today, and every day, we stand with women who are experiencing abuse, homelessness, and the struggle for safety. Help eliminate violence and create a world where every woman has a safe place to call home 💛 #DublinSimon #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #HomelessnessAwareness #InternationalDayToEndViolenceAgainstWomen #WomenDeserveSafety

The devastating reality of gender-based violence cannot be ignored – in Australia in mid-2024, gender-based violence has resurfaced in the media, resulting from (correct as at 30th April) the deaths of 36 women this year at the hands of men, most often men known to them. In our latest blog, Cait Wilding, Team Leader at Australian Childhood Foundation, explores the wide-reaching impacts of gender-based violence on children and young people. From the ongoing perpetuation of harmful gender roles to trauma resulting from experiencing or witnessing gender-based violence that can catastrophically influence their adult lives, children and young people are profoundly affected by it. So, where do we go from here? While trauma may be a risk for future violence, breaking the cycle is possible. We must work towards understanding the underlying causes of gender-based violence and utilising trauma-transformative therapy as an early intervention strategy to keep women, children and young people safe.
