Completed the “Introduction to Teaching English Learners” Specialization on Coursera Just wrapped up this insightful specialization offered by Rice University 🎓 I took this course to refresh my understanding, unlearn old practices, and relearn innovative strategies to better serve English learners. Producing successful learners goes beyond teaching them course content, it's important that they feel encouraged to want to learn. How do you impact your learners to develop the sheer willpower and immense determination to learn? Learning English, especially as a second language comes with lots of challenges. You can tell by the struggle of many learners to get good grades in English. However, most of these challenges can be overcome by creating a positive learning environment where learners can ask questions, give ideas, make mistakes, correct them, and get feedback in a safe environment. Sadly, learners in large classroom settings with minimal teacher contact are left behind. The idea was that new teachers would benefit from a couple of years teaching General English at lower levels first, before taking on these more “demanding” classes. I followed this advice, but quickly came to love the challenge of teaching both exam classes and very high-level learners. However, teaching very high level learners, a number of whom will want to take an exam like Cambridge C2 Proficiency, is something which creates fear for many teachers, who sometimes can feel that they are somehow not good enough. This masterclass addresses these issues and considers what proficient learners of English are likely to want and to need to develop their English to these high levels. It also introduces the idea of the needs (and wants) analysis as a tool to help all teachers, both inexperienced and very experienced, to identify what and how learning can take place to meet these needs. I also introduce two different ways of thinking about syllabus design, which show different ways of approaching learning, and I aim to take away some of the fear and the mystique which surrounds teaching at the very highest levels.
