First Jobs: They teach us lots of things…most importantly the value of showing up. Outside of babysitting- which I continued steadily even after college graduation- my first job with a steady schedule and weekly paycheck - was working at the Koldkiss Snowball Stand for Brian Gapsis the summer before my Freshman year of high-school. I don’t really remember the “interview” process- but I do remember orientation and shadow days. I learned the importance of keeping a clean stand - less bee 🐝 problems and quicker closing at the end of the night. I learned how to keep a close eye on cup count and the money box - accurate reconciliation builds trust. I learned that showing up - even when it’s pouring rain 🌧️ or sweltering hot 🥵 - also builds trust with your managers and your regular customers. I learned the importance of remembering the orders of those regular customers - they seemed just a little more delighted you remembered what they liked. I also learned that there IS a limit to the number of free snowballs you should consume in one day 😀! This time of year - when the snowball stands open - and I enjoy my first (of many) Egg Custard with Marshmallows - I remember the important lessons from my first “real” job and am amazed how I still use them today. That time when I assumed a nod meant understanding... We were getting close to opening a sports facility, and I was excited to have someone join the team. I talked him through everything about the scoreboard for the pool. He nodded throughout, and had no questions. A few weeks later, on installation day, I was called to the pool deck. My new staffer was keen to be helpful but appeared to be hearing me say things for the first time! I had falsely assumed, in the rush to open, that we only needed one conversation. Given the number of times I reread a recipe, clearly our brains don't work that way, even with the best intentions! Hobbies include: I enjoy disc golfing, hiking them big o' mountains, running/working out, jiujitsu, watching UFC fights on Saturday nights, beer pong, movies, and hanging out with the crew.
