"What's YOUR definition of sustainability?" 💚 As I shared before, I am taking the Compass Education Course Level 1 this month. The first unit begins with the above thought-provoking question. Interestingly, everyone had different definitions: * My Definition: - Sustain ABLE: Inspired by Jaimie P. Cloud’s work, it's about empowering people to solve issues rather than just knowing them. As Jamie says, "Able to Sustain" focuses on positive skills to solve problems. It’s about "inspiring" people, much like what we strive to do at Inspire Citizens. * Other Educators' Definitions: - The balance between society and nature - Being conscious and aware of what’s around us - Reflecting on our responsibility to create a better world for ourselves and future generations - Making good decisions so that future generations may benefit - Being a critical consumer - Going beyond daily habits to inspire broader change - Recognizing that "sustainability" is often overused and can lead to greenwashing * Additional Definitions: - The very first definition from the United Nations Brundtland Commission (1987): "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." - Compass Education: 'A set of systems conditions that allows humans to flourish indefinitely.' This question is crucial because, to effectively work on sustainability, we need to align on its definition and core concepts while also embracing the plurality of the term. At teach4SDG yesterday i learned about several key concepts and approaches, to Green Economy and sustainable development which includes 1. Circular economy: A framework that seeks to minimize waste, reduce environmental impact, and promote resource efficiency through the reuse, repurposing, and recycling of materials. 2.Sustainable Development Goals: The United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including responsible consumption and production, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action, which aim to guide and promote global progress towards a more sustainable future. To integrate green economy and sustainable development concepts into my teaching curriculum, i could consider implementing the following strategies: * Real-world projects and applications: Encourage students to apply their knowledge in hands-on projects that address local environmental challenges, such as waste management, water conservation, or energy efficiency. *Guest speakers and field trips: Invite local sustainability experts, community leaders, and policymakers to speak to my class and organize field trips to green businesses or sustainability initiatives to provide students with first-hand experiences and insights.

Learn practical strategies to ensure authenticity and transparency in sustainability efforts. Excited to share my experience from the 5-week e-Grad School Module on Global Sustainability! The key things that I will bring forward towards my academic and professional journey are: Biosphere 2: A Reality Check: The failed attempt to replicate Earth's ecosystem in Biosphere 2 taught us a crucial lesson: there is no substitute for our planet. Facing oxygen shortages, crop failures, and animal extinction highlighted the need to move beyond 'substitution optimism' and embrace conscientious consumption to sustain future generations. Diverse Metrics for Assessing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Sustainable development transcends mere economic growth and environmental conservation. It demands a holistic approach, integrating social, economic, and environmental factors. Evaluating multiple indicators such as environmental justice and social equity provides a comprehensive view of development outcomes. Calling on Collaborative Efforts Within Our Community: Active participation in initiatives led by esteemed organizations like the Australian Association for Environmental Education Inc and the Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP) plays a crucial role in advancing sustainability education. Urgent and transformative changes in sustainability policies, supported by initiatives such as the Australian Government's National Action Plan for Education on Sustainability, highlight the critical need to stay informed through insightful reports like the 2023 Queensland Sustainability Report and Australia's Climate Change Strategies, ensuring positive impacts for the community. Thank you to Deanna Meth and the professional academia for this transformative program. The insights I have gained are invaluable, and I eagerly anticipate applying them in my future endeavors.
