The brave people of Uganda, from the Kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro, Toro, and Ankole, to the diverse communities across the country, fought for the right to self-governance and freedom. On this day in 1962, Uganda emerged as a sovereign nation, with a vision for unity and prosperity, standing proudly as the “Pearl of Africa.” Uganda maintained its Commonwealth membership. A second round of elections in April 1962 elected members to a new National Assembly. Milton Obote, leader of the majority coalition in the National Assembly, became prime minister and led Uganda to formal independence on October 9, 1962. Happy Zimbabwean Independence Day, I took this year's Independence Day as an occasion to reflect, and I came to the following conclusion:  Zimbabwe is a slave to its glorious past and the alternative road we took post independence. Unlike most of our African brothers and sister elsewhere, who slid into poverty right after independence, we entered a promising area of prosperity and growth. Zimbabwe’s economy was one of the fastest growing not only in Africa but in the whole world. We prided ourselves as the breadbasket of Africa, and we’re the academic pride of our continent. It looked like there was only one way for Zimbabwe to go, up. And it is exactly these years after Independence which I like to call the glory days and love to reminisce about for hours, and somehow foolish to think that we will return to those days, that we are paying tribute to. It is for this that as Zimbabweans we fail to accept reality and think we should be further than we are. We are so focused on what we used to be that instead of moving forward into a new prosperous future, all our effort go towards restoring the old, but today I say it's time for new glory days. As Zimbabweans, we must accept that we can never regain what we lost, we cannot rewrite the mistakes of the past, but we can, and together we will write new stories and not return to old but move forward to new glory days. So today on Independence, all I ask is that you cut Zimbabwe some slack and give it time to grow into its full potential without constantly comparing it to what it used to be. Day 5/7 PROUD TO BE ZAMBIAN BECAUSE OF THE PEACE THAT REIGNS THROUGH SMOOTH TRANSITION OF POWER My pride in being Zambian is deeply rooted in the peaceful transfer of power that has characterized Zambia's political landscape. From the tenure of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, who led the nation to independence, to the successive presidencies of Dr. Frederick Chiluba, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, Michael Chilufya Sata, Edgar Lungu, and now Hakainde Hichilema, the orderly transition of leadership without chaos is a testament to Zambia's commitment to democracy and stability. This smooth transition of power reflects a strong sense of national unity and a commitment to upholding democratic principles. It demonstrates that Zambia's leaders prioritize the well-being of the nation above personal or political interests, fostering an environment where peace and stability can thrive. The fact that Zambia has successfully navigated these transitions without major disruptions speaks volumes about the maturity of our political institutions and the resilience of its people. It also sends a powerful message to the world our Countries’ commitment to democracy, governance, and the rule of law. Indeed, as I rightly express, the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next underscores the belief that peace transcends throughout the nation, starting from its leadership. It's a source of immense pride us Zambians and reflects the collective efforts of the nation to uphold its values and aspirations. My pride in being Zambian is not only a reflection of the nation's history and achievements but also a recognition of its potential and the responsibility of its citizens to contribute positively to its future. And I proudly say, "truly Zambia is who we are, and Zambia is what we make of it." Senegal, for me, has set a new political tone in Africa, demonstrating that they have belief in the younger generation by voting for Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the 44 year old, as their new president. This political feat should not just end within the borders of Senegal or just within the West African sub-region. I know and strongly believe that there dozens of young politicians across the continent very capable of making a mark when given the chance to. Well, there are others also who are driven not by their intent to make a mark but by their parochial interests. The continent has once been populated by heads of states and leaders who were below the age of 60 years. And, many who tasted the leadership of some of the great leaders like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Patrice Lummuba, Thomas Isidore Noël Sankara, etc could attest to verve with which they governed. They were not without blemish, nonetheless. The likes of Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopian President, Andry Rajeolina, President of Madagascar, Évariste Ndayishimiye, President of Burundi, etc. are examples of what I have always advocated for, having presidents below the age of 60 years. I have maintained and would continue to stand by argument that with over 65% of the African population below the age 35 years, there should be no reason to allow politicians above the age of 65 years to decide the destinies of many young Africans. The trend must change. Don't get me wrong. I have absolutely nothing against leaders above the age of 60 years. But, just think about this. How is it that we put a cap on the age at which one should literally go for pension at between 60-65 years and yet when it comes to becoming a president of a state, which to me is one of the most difficult jobs on earth, people above 60 years are allowed to? It may sound simplistic, but think about it? Anyways congratulations to the President-elect of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He is now the youngest democratically elected African president.

Independence is not just a milestone; it is a commitment to shaping a future that aligns with our values. Yet today’s independence faces new pressures from global powers through infrastructure investments, loans, and aid conditions. We often find ourselves choosing between accessing resources and preserving true autonomy. 60 YEARS STRONG: HONOURING OUR HERITAGE AND EMBRACING OUR FUTURE Fellow students and citizens at large, 60 years ago, on a day like today, men and women, youths and children of our Great Nation rose to sing the thunderous welcoming song, "..All one, strong and free..." to mother Zambia, after a long struggle for our independence. Today we celebrate this important day as the people living in the realities that our founding fathers could only dream about. Therefore, it is such an honor that after 60 years of independence we can still celebrate this important day in peace, freedom and unity, the ultimate dream of our freedom fighters. Amidst these many blessings, the majority of our country remains in poverty. This means that there's still work for us all to do. Our economic freedom remains a fight we should spare no effort to win. As citizens therefore, especially we the youths must rise to the event and fight for the economic freedom of our Great Nation just like our founding fathers selflessly fought for our political independence. The fight against corruption must be the lifeblood of our peace and freedom. This we must not only leave for government to fight. It is our collective responsibility to protect the little we have even as we work to build a brighter future for mother Zambia. Ultimately, we are only a nation because we are individual citizens. Therefore, the dream of a better Zambia should reign strong in our individual lives just like we want to see it in the government policy. We have witnessed a troubling neglect of the principles of separation of powers and human rights, alongside a concerning trend of selfishness among our politicians. These issues are the elephants in the room that cannot be ignored any longer. True independence goes beyond political sovereignty; it requires economic independence and the genuine empowerment of all Zambians. As we commemorate this milestone, let’s advocate for a future where our governance reflects the needs of our people and where every Zambian has a real chance at prosperity.
