But the foundation of each concreate building lies in the foundation of it, the key to build complex software starts by having a deep understanding of data structure and algorithms which are the building bricks for building bigger infrastructure which is used by billions of people around the globe. I was invited to speak at Data Science Leuven about a popular yet controversial article I published a while back on Medium.com, which can be read here: https://lnkd.in/enrZMV_K. The article is a synthesis of my own experiences transitioning from an academic career to one in enterprise data/IT, and aims to provide a counter narrative to the mainstream forever-good-news show that surrounds tech careers in "industry". The ideas apparently resonated with a great number of (ex-)academics, judging by the numerous responses I've received in my personal mailbox. But it also triggered a number of techies who did not like the picture I painted of their industry. Therefore, I've decided to enter the lions den and defend the article - in a hopefully humorous way - to a mixed audience of academics, data scientists and engineers.
