𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞, 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 ✨ ⏳ Time has a funny way of shifting when you’re on maternity leave. Somehow, it feels like the longest and shortest months of my life all at once. 💫 These past few months have been a whirlwind of joy, learning, and (let’s be honest) exhaustion. I’ve experienced moments of absolute bliss and moments of pure unpredictability — all part of this incredible journey of parenthood. Stepping away from the professional world for a little while has given me a new perspective. In so many ways, the lessons I’m learning at home feel deeply connected to the skills we value at work: adaptability, patience, problem-solving, and embracing the unknown. Every day is different, and every challenge is an opportunity to grow 🌱. Right now, I’m focused on soaking up every bit of this experience — the cuddles 🤗, the milestones 🎉, and yes, even the chaos 🙃. This time feels sacred, and I’m grateful for the chance to be present for it 🎁. For those who have navigated (or are currently navigating) maternity leave, I’d love to hear your thoughts: 👉 What’s one lesson you learned during this time that you carried with you into your career? 👉 How did you stay connected (or disconnected) from work while on leave? 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 could be exactly what someone else needs to hear today. 🍀

Baby due in January means Christmas comes early at our house this year! Instead of the usual countdown, we’re soaking up every minute of holiday magic ahead of time – before things get really exciting around here. This got me thinking about timing in business. Sometimes you need to get ahead, shift your plans, or lean in early to make space for what’s next. Whether it’s prepping for growth, seizing an opportunity, or just making room for new goals, a little proactive planning can go a long way. Here’s to a season of good timing and making space for what matters! #christmas #timemanagement #entrepreurship #lancasterp

Our Head of Services, Rod Nadwie-Smith, recently celebrated his one year anniversary at SDN. When asked how he describes his experience at SDN so far, Rod shared three words – inspiring, motivating and authentic. “The rich history of SDN was one of the factors in my decision to work here. Our history is attached to the values of the organisation, which are embedded in our culture. It is organisations such as SDN that can stand the test of time, that survive.” When looking back over the last year, Rod shares that what he has most enjoyed about working at SDN is our ability to be large enough to have scale, advocacy and reach but still be small enough to feel authentically connected. “SDN is at the sweet spot of size and impact. We can still intimately understand our customers and teams, and yet make a positive difference to the lives of children and families every day.” While Rod continuously balances a demanding schedule, he enjoys the various opportunities he has to physically spend time at our services and see the lived experiences with children every day. At SDN, we have children at the centre of all decision making. This influences the decisions we make in our processes, for our workforce and also in the partnerships we form with external organisations. One of the key initiatives that Rod has implemented at SDN has been our new association with Woolworths at Work. “Partnering with such organisations that are aligned to the work we’re doing, who support our commitment to children’s wellbeing, learning and development and who share the same core values is really important.” Looking ahead, Rod is excited about the opportunities that SDN has to influence the sector and Government reforms. “We at SDN are privileged to have a voice in areas not only limited to Early Learning, but also on inclusion and how we support children at risk.” With the introduction of our new 5 year strategic plan, Rod shares that “it is a great time to be a part of SDN. I’m looking forward to building our contribution both in the sector and for us as an organisation, in creating an equitable world where all children thrive.” #sdnchildrensservices #staffprofile #anniversary

My second maternity leave is happening 6 years after the first. I thought I had forgotten everything, but it turns out my hands remember! I used to think only skills like riding a bicycle stay with you forever, but now I realize every skill we’ve learned—whether from the past or present—is deeply ingrained in us. This applies to business skills too. Even if we don’t use them every day, they don’t just disappear. It takes a little patience and practice, and they come right back. So don’t worry—you won’t forget your old skills. Just stay curious and keep learning new ones! At least now this is my way to stay tuned… #MaternityLeave #LifelongLearning #SkillsDevelopment #BusinessSkills #GrowthMindset #CareerAndFamily #NeverStopLearning #ProfessionalDevelopment

One day, they’re your tiny superhero, and before you know it, your little Superman is all grown up and flying on their own. Where does the time go? As working parents and nurses, we dedicate so much of our lives to others—our patients, our careers, and even our own ambitions. But in the blink of an eye, our babies grow up. Here’s the hard truth: 𝑛𝑜 𝑝𝑎𝑦𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑐𝑘 𝑜𝑟 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢’𝑙𝑙 𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑓 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘 𝑎𝑙𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡. I’ve been there, juggling shifts, losing time, and wondering how it all happened so fast. That’s why I’m passionate about building a life that works around my family, not the other way around. Time and financial freedom aren’t just buzzwords—they’re the key to being present for the milestones that truly matter. If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like you're missing out, it’s time to take a step back and reassess. You CAN balance work and life, but it starts with the decision to make your family a priority. I’ve been there, and I can show you how to reclaim your time while still building something meaningful. Message me to learn more about how you can start your journey to freedom today. P.S. My little Superman is growing up way too fast! Don't let time slip away; start making the most of it NOW. #nurses #family #worklifebalance #milestones #parenting #familyfirst #workingparents

I'm emerging out of maternity leave to share something I'm quite chuffed about! My paper titled "A Justice-Oriented Conceptual and Analytical Framework for Decolonising and Desecularising the Field of Educational Technology" is just published: https://lnkd.in/gPhX6wVn. This paper is so dear to me, for two main reasons: Firstly, it was my baby alongside my baby. I wrote a significant portion of it during my maternity leave while baba was contact napping on me. Whilst very sleep deprived, it kept my brain alert being able to write something I'm passionate about (and that I seldom got time to think about deeply with the busyness of a work day). Additionally, I feel like my newly-found perspective as a mama infused in my work, with care, love, nurture, and cultivation emerging as central themes of a holistic education (that we often forget when talking about EdTech) Secondly, it was the first time I wrote something that truly embodied all parts of me, as a woman of colour and a person of faith. While I often write about decoloniality, I have never touched on secularity. I've often experienced cognitive dissonance in my academic work, suppressing the spiritual parts of myself and not being able to draw on texts that I consider sacred. Desecularisation, in the sense that I use it in my paper, is a response to the increasing trends and forces promoting secularism as a universal worldview. Whether or not you are a person of faith, I hope that you can celebrate with me today that something that reflects all parts of me is featured in an academic journal and contributes to global knowledge production. (PS. this post was written during a contact nap!)
