As part of celebrating National Apprentice Week, we chatted with one of our recently qualified apprentices, Harry Dawson, to find out what he enjoyed and learnt from his apprenticeship with LB Bentley. Harry recently completed his apprenticeship an NVQ Level 3 – Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technician. Q: What do you like about Engineering and what appealed to you about completing an Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technician apprenticeship? Harry: What appealed to me was this apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to use my initiative, and I enjoy and excel in the problem solving aspect of engineering. Q: What skills have you gained on this apprenticeship? Harry: I would say the fundamental skills I have gained that I use on a day to day basis are problem solving, general machining and CNC knowledge and probably the most important is self confidence in my own abilities. Q: What other things have you learnt on the apprenticeship? Harry: Team work and learning that everyone has an integral part of being a team member. Also, learning more about the production engineering and product design. Q: What are the strengths you have developed over the apprenticeship? Harry: I have learnt to be more resourceful and have developed my initiative to think of other ways to approach problems and find solutions. Apprenticeships are a vital new talent pipeline into industry. I’ve seen the impact of apprenticeships on people and the businesses they work for. I started my career as an apprentice mechanical design engineer involved in the development of flour rolling mills, flaking and pellet mills. We’ve also had many apprentices through the doors at Suprafilt Ltd who have gone on to lead projects and make a huge impact on our business. Apprenticeships are always a strong option for anyone, providing real skills and experience, so it was great to hear the Prime Minister talk about reforms to the system this week at the Labour Party Conference. The route will be made more flexible for businesses and new foundation apprenticeships will be created for young people. We know the water industry is struggling to fill skilled roles due to changing technologies and an ageing workforce. There were reports over summer that an estimated 63,000 vacancies would need to be filled across the industry by 2027. Apprenticeships will be important to address these shortages. Building Trade Apprentice of the Day Name- Brooklyn Schmelter 2nd Apprentice Contractor- Cardinal Mechanical What skills have you gained through this apprenticeship that you’re most proud of? Some skills that I have gained throughout this apprenticeship would be critical thinking and patience. What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship rather than another path? I was inspired to pursue an apprenticeship over another path because of all the amazing opportunities I get presented with. How has this experience shaped your goals for the future? This experience has made my goals for the future bigger than I ever thought possible. I feel with everything I have learned so far, and with so much more learning to come, my future can be anything I want it to be. What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship? Advice I could give would be to absorb anything and everything. Don’t hold on to one way of doing things. You can learn something from everyone, but you won’t if you think everything you do is perfect. Also, messing something up means you’re trying, and messing up is better than never trying at all. Thanks to this apprenticeship, where do you see yourself in the next few years? In the next few years, I can see myself in my own house living comfortably. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the opportunities this apprenticeship has offered me.

good job. young people learning trades are our future and business with government should be doing more to give inexperienced young people to learn the trades and then management skills. management skills without a trades experience creates unrealistic expectations. what commonality is there between an aiconditionioned office and and a factory floor , construction site?

D’Andre is currently completing an apprenticeship as a Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technician. Q: What do you like about engineering? D: I like having the skills to be able to design and make something, and really appreciate creating and engineering something from the start to a finished product. Q: What skills have you gained? D: During my apprenticeship I have developed skills on the manual lathes and milling machines. I have also learnt a lot about problem solving and tolerances. Q: What else have you learnt? D: I have learnt that being patient is fundamental in any role and apprenticeship. Time keeping is also another valuable skill that I have learnt. Q: What are your strengths? D: I keep a very level head with my work and stay resilient even when maybe not succeeding with tasks on the first try. I keep going until I get the job done to the required level of quality and output. This week is National Apprenticeship Week - a celebration of the contribution that apprenticeships can make to workforce development and economic growth. There are many skilled people across the business who started their careers as apprentices, either at KPM UK or elsewhere. We currently have two employees completing and one starting their apprenticeships: Mark Pellow - Production Engineer, is studying a Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship alongside a manufacturing degree. "Navigating my apprenticeship alongside my engineering degree has proven to be both demanding and fulfilling. This dual commitment has not only sharpened my hands-on skills and technical ability but has significantly enriched my academic journey by exposing me to diverse aspects of the engineering industry. Through hands-on and technical experience with in-depth research, I've developed a well-rounded perspective that integrates with both my coursework and professional work." Tyler Hodges - QA Apprentice Technical Support Technician, is studying towards Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacture and Engineering and is due to complete his apprenticeship in 2025. "Embarking on an engineering apprenticeship has been transformative for me. The hands-on experience has not only honed my practical skills but also allowed me to seamlessly apply theoretical knowledge in real-world projects. The mentorship I've received is invaluable, providing insights that go beyond textbooks. An apprenticeship not only immerses me in practical applications but also exposes me to diverse challenges, fostering problem-solving skills. The collaborative environment encourages teamwork and effective communication, crucial skills in the professional realm."
