Construction Industry partners join forces to campaign against modern slavery in the sector.   A Morgan Sindall Group led consortium which includes Berkeley Group, Laing O’Rourke, Skanska, Kier, Galliford Try, VCG, Danny Sullivan Group, Randstad, Hays and Carmichael have worked in partnership with Unseen; a UK anti-slavery charity to create a short film to highlight the everyday reality of victims and demonstrate some of the key signs for construction site teams to look out for. The companies involved in this initiative recognise the collective responsibility of businesses at the forefront of the construction sector to educate the wider supply chain and end modern slavery on UK construction sites.    Modern slavery is common in several sectors in the UK, but according to data gathered by Unseen, the construction sector is in the top three. The widespread use of sub-contracted labour, high turnover of workers, and complex supply chains can all serve to inhibit transparency and increase the risk of labour abuse and exploitation. Modern slavery comes in many forms, from labour abuse to forced labour, with 60% of cases reported to Unseen being labour abuse. The released film focuses on common signs of labour abuse, including working excessively long hours, not having a contract, receiving deductions from pay, and lacking adequate qualifications and training.   The aim is for this film to be used across the built environment sector, as part of both training programmes and site inductions to raise awareness of this issue and thereby increase the chances of exploitative activity being reported.   https://lnkd.in/ettsY8DH

An innovative construction solution delivered in partnership with NSW Police will bolster the capabilities of police in the Illawarra region, ensuring officers can continue to support the growing community 👏. As project lead for coordination and construction management of the new Helensburgh Police Station, Downer’s Government & IFM team facilitated delivery of a modular facility built off-site, minimising downtime for NSW Police. 🚔 The modern station will enhance the local force’s operational capacity by supporting up to eight officers compared to three previously and returns a permanent police presence to Helensburgh.
