Today, I learned that K-Mart closed its last store in the US. As a high school borough kid in NYC (those who know...will know what I mean by that moniker), K-Mart was my very first job. Working at K-Mart taught me valuable lessons that have stayed with me throughout my career: - I learned the importance of working on and leading a team. Managing a diverse group of individuals taught me that authentic support is just as crucial as encouragement. Here my diverse team was a healthy mix of part timers (mostly other high school students) and full time employees. Lesson learned...Managing people and leading people are not the same. - Understanding the entire ecosystem your team relies on is key. It is important not only to have an appreciation but a working understanding of the challenges your team encounters. Happy Team leads to a Happy Client. Experiencing all levels of my team gave me insights into their work's current and future aspects. - Embracing curiosity is vital. My continuous curiosity has opened doors to growth opportunities. IMO, the evidence is clear that Starbucks became too big of a machine, focused on getting pricey coffee into the mouths of consumers and losing sight of store operations, wait times and aesthetic... I guess that's easy to do when you're busy opening 722 new stores per quarter.
