Did you know that the Dutch government has signed countless hydrogen partnerships, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), and other types of agreements with multiple countries across most continents? The Dutch government actively seeks to position the Netherlands as a reliable trade partner and clean energy hub in northwest Europe. The Port of Rotterdam currently serves as the energy hub for northwest Europe and handles 8,800 petajoules (PJ) in fossil fuels annually. This is about 2,444TWh, or more than three times the Dutch primary energy consumption and 17% of the EU’s primary energy consumption in 2022. However, with the phase-out of fossil fuels, Rotterdam must shift its focus toward renewable fuel flows to maintain its relevance. Leveraging its status as Europe’s largest energy hub, the Port of Rotterdam is well-positioned to become a central import hub for hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives in Europe. In addition to the Dutch government's energy diplomacy, the Port of Rotterdam also actively pursues its own hydrogen agreements and partnerships with entities around the world. The EU continues its race to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. This will only be achievable if it is able to advance the deployment of technologies contributing to the energy transition. That means ready and available solutions for renewable generation, storage and network or grid upgrades, as well as rapidly advancing technologies like hydrogen. Learn more 👇

Germany has urged the European Union (EU) to postpone certain regulations affecting the green hydrogen industry, which it believes could harm the competitiveness of this vital market. The EU currently requires clean hydrogen producers to prove that their renewable energy output matches their hydrogen production, a standard that Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck argues should be delayed until 2035. This request comes as local green hydrogen companies in Europe express concerns over cheap imports from China, making it challenging for them to compete. The EU aims to produce 10 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030 to help reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Australia’s Labor-led federal government has unveiled a new incentive for renewable hydrogen to attract early investment in the country’s hydrogen development. The tax incentive of A$2 (US$1.33) per kilogram of renewable hydrogen is seen as a direct response to the US Inflation Reduction Act, which some in the industry say poses a threat to Australia’s hydrogen development. The Dutch hydrogen quest: What it takes to decarbonize hydrogen demand

New report by the European Court of Auditors finds it unlikely that the EU can achieve its green hydrogen targets for 2030. In what the Court calls a "reality check", it finds that available information from the member states and industry do not support the EU level targets of 10Mt domestic and 10Mt imported renewable hydrogen. It also posits that the Commission's impact assessments were insufficient. The Court now recommends that the Commission update the EU hydrogen targets taking into account 'regional and industrial sector specificities and the role of low-carbon hydrogen' by the end of 2025. The European Commission seems to be waking up, by fits and starts, from its hydrogen daydreams. Will they learn the lesson? A financial watchdog's statement that the EU's hydrogen-based decarbonisation plans are unrealistic and prohibitively expensive is significant. Time and money are scarce resources in the fight against climate change. The European Court of Auditors' report strikes at the core of the "technology-neutral" approach to climate policy, echoed by Von der Leyen in her speech to the European Parliament today. Not all options are valid for decarbonising Europe. Investing massive public funds in unproven and costly solutions, when viable alternatives exist, is simply shooting ourselves in the foot. We need renewable hydrogen, but not to the extent that it distracts us from proven methods to reduce emissions: energy savings, renewables, and electrification of industry, transport, and heating. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eCkMgQMA
💥 European Court of Auditors warns that EU hydrogen targets are unrealistic and need a reality check! 👋 We've been saying this for years! 📈 The EU's oversized hydrogen plans seriously threaten the bloc's public finances and decarbonisation efforts. 🚀 Why? No other technology has experienced such rapid growth as planned by the EU for hydrogen production. All this despite concerns about its environmental impact, cost, and readiness. 🤔 Why gamble Europe's decarbonisation on unproven and expensive pathways when viable alternatives are ready? Direct electrification and renewable energy, combined with enhanced energy efficiency in buildings, industry, and transport, can decarbonise our energy systems faster and cheaper. ⚠️ The European Commission should reconsider its hydrogen production scale for 2030 and learn the lesson to face the hype around Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and Small Modular Reactors (SMR). 👉 Read our OpEd: https://lnkd.in/daYkqKBi 👉 Check out our policy briefing: https://lnkd.in/eA-uPzYh
