Have you read the recent white paper by World Economic Forum promoting a sustainable development pathway for the Cerrado in Brazil? The Cerrado is the second largest biome in Latin America and the most biodiverse savanna in the world. However, it has lost half its native vegetation to agriculture – and conversion is accelerating. The report highlights ways to align the production and protection agendas, in order to safeguard the natural capital of this critical biome while continuing to support economic development, including: 🌎 A production plan that involves sustainable intensification of agriculture on existing productive land – as well as regenerating degraded land. 🌎 A protection plan involves drastic reduction of further conversion of the Cerrado must, through a combination of law enforcement to prevent illegal conversion and financial incentives for landowners. 🔗 Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/e4wran4C

Last week, the online Workshop for Case Study 3 took place. 35 participants from #agriculture, research, public health, #water authority & operator as well as public authority sectors took part. They discussed how solutions for the agricultural #reuse of water in the Besòs River Basin could be implemented. In the workshop, the participants discussed the idea of moving from individual solutions towards a system-wide strategy: that included talking about how the implementation of certain solutions could act as a "snowball effect" to ease the implementation of other solutions. Further, they discussed how the participating organisations could contribute to the actual implementation of each solution. The workshop built off a previous workshop that was held last fall in Granollers: https://lnkd.in/e6z5Q5wm Thanks to Carme Bosch and Xavier Martinez Lladó from Eurecat - Technology Centre and to Victor Matamoros and Miren López de Alda Villaizan from Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) who not only moderted the workshop but are also part of Case Study 3 of #PROMISCES! #zeropollution #humanhealth

🔗🌿🪱Healthy soils are the backbone of life on Earth—key to sustainable food production, climate stability and protecting biodiversity. Yet, over 60% of soils in the EU are currently unhealthy, jeopardizing these essential foundations. In response, the European Commission launched the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO) in 2021, marking a pivotal step in the European Green Deal. ➤ Here’s what you need to know: ● The Soil Health Dashboard tracks soil health, highlighting that degradation affects 62% of EU soils. Shockingly, 24% suffer from one degradation process, 16% from two, 10% from three, and 5% from four. ● With the ambitious EU Soil Strategy for 2030 and the proposed Soil Monitoring Law, EUSO plays a critical role in shaping and implementing policy to protect our soils. Raising the water table on agricultural peat soils is the focus of FarmPEAT’s Supporting Action 7.1—drain management. To date, this has been carried out by installing peat or plastic dams. However, one of our project farmers queried the method of drain infilling. FarmPEAT explored this option by searching for relevant scientific literature and consulting peatland and hydrological experts. Some of the considerations raised included continued drainage, damage to the peatland plot, higher carbon emissions, labour costs, and monitoring requirements. Since infilling has not yet been proven to successfully raise the water table on adjacent plots, the FarmPEAT Project decided that the environmental risks and higher labour costs outweigh the potential benefits to carbon emissions and biodiversity. We invite you to read our 'Investigation into Drain Infilling on Agricultural Peat Soils' here or at https://lnkd.in/euAdPBzZ. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for future work!

🌱📢 #ELO applauds the withdrawal of the flawed #SUR proposal by the European Commission. This decision, announced by President Ursula von der Leyen, reflects a recognition that the existing proposal lacked thorough evaluation and viable solutions for farmers. 💡 Moving forward, the focus should shift to fostering innovation and exploring sustainable alternatives that align with the goals of agriculture while equipping farmers with effective tools against climate change. And let's keep in mind that stakeholder inclusion and collaboration is key in drafting effective and implementable regulation. 🔗 Visit our website to learn more about our advocacy efforts and the importance of meaningful farmer involvement in agricultural discussions: https://lnkd.in/d8fjwZik #Farm2Fork #SUR #PPP #GreenDeal #EuropeanPolicy #ELO 🚜🌾

You may have heard of companion planting 🌿 🍅 but have you heard of compatible occupation? 🌳 ⚡ Portuguese, DSO E-REDES’ 🇵🇹 plan to #IntegrateNature using compatible occupations: land-uses that deviate from traditional fuel management laws in Portugal, yet still effectively reduce fire risks while adding value for local communities. In 2022, E-REDES collaborated on a study to identify 107 plant species ideal for Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) due to their ability to: 🍎 Generate local socio-economic benefits, like fruit harvesting or wood sales. 🔥 Minimise flammability and combustibility risks. 🐝 Boost #biodiversity and deliver essential ecosystem services like soil formation and erosion prevention. Cutting agriculture emissions and restoring nature: Discover Denmark’s historic tripartite agreement 🌾 With broad political consensus, Denmark's government has today unveiled a historic tripartite agreement. Including nature restoration, the world's first carbon emission tax for agriculture, and much more, this agreement will initiate the largest transformation of the Danish landscape in over 100 years. "I would not hesitate to call this a historic achievement. With this agreement, we are now allocating billions to carry out a significant transformation of Denmark's land use. Danish nature will be changed in a way not seen since the drainage of wetlands in 1864. Denmark will become the first country in the world to introduce a CO2e tax on agriculture. And with the new agreement, we are launching an ambitious nitrogen reduction effort to ensure the return of fish to our coasts and fjords." says Jeppe Bruus, Denmark's Minister for Green Transition. The political agreement follows months of negotiations between the government and parliamentary parties in the Danish Parliament. It builds on an agreement established in June 2024, with contributions from organisations such as Danmarks Naturfredningsforening and the Danish Agriculture and Food Council. With the Directive on Soil Monitoring and Resilience, we are one step closer to addressing the issue of soil and land degradation in Europe. However, it will only be possible to achieve long-lasting change and impact with the support of local and regional governments.🏙. If you have 5 minutes to spare 🕒, in this position paper, you will find a set of 7 key recommendations to enhance the current Directive 🕵️ https://rb.gy/png42o #soil #land #sustainability #cities #degradation #climatechange #biodiversity
Healthy soils play a critical role in sustainable urban development, influencing agricultural productivity, ecosystem functions, water quality, and climate resilience. 🌳 This is why the European Commission’s Directive on Soil Monitoring and Resilience needs to incorporate the knowledge and expertise on soil management within local and regional governments, making their active involvement indispensable in effective soil conservation initiatives as well as in taking action in the contaminated areas. In a recently published position paper, ICLEI lays out 7 recommendations to enhance the current Directive. Learn more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eS7UXYTT Roger Roca Vallejo Philipp LaHaela Walter goksen sahin

You can ask all young farmers: access to land is a challenge everywhere in Europe (and beyond!). This must be a priority of the next EU governance, building on the work done by the European Parliament in its Initiative Report on generational renewal and the EU farms of the future - 2022/2182(INI) - https://lnkd.in/ef5vjFex ➡️While private property is governed by the national laws of Member States, the issue of land access is certainly a topic for the European Union. The relationship between agricultural land and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) makes no doubt, and the Soil Health reflections necessarily require thinking in the wider perspective of land preservation (check our 2023 #Landstories campaign for more about land take). ➡️The sharing of information and good practices between Member States with different situations and approaches is a necessity for a better use of CAP measures through the 28 Strategic Plans and to improve land management at national and local level. ➡️Land issues go far beyond technical matters, laying at the core of the vision of agriculture the EU wants to promote, whether on the front of food security, sustainable agriculture and farming system, generational renewal, or human rights. 📃Find CEJA recommendations in our policy paper "Access to Land: are we loosing the European plot?" https://lnkd.in/eBdxsWxa
