Our crew came together to take part in the Share the Dignity ‘It’s in the Bag’ drive for the third year running, donating hundreds of essential items for women in need this festive season. 👜 These bags are so much more than just items—they’re a message of care and support for women facing homelessness, escaping domestic violence, or going through tough times over the holidays. We’re proud to do our bit to sprinkle a little cheer this festive season and encourage others to get involved too! ✨ Learn more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/d8GxA4yy #ItsintheBag #ShareTheDignity #SprinkleSomeCheer #businessDEPOT #oneplace

Has your mum, grandma, aunty, sister, cousin or friend been homeless before, or are they now? What if you thought they weren’t, but they are? 🚗 In greater Brisbane alone, over 700 women over 55 are currently facing hardships. Referred to as the hidden homeless, these women are living in cars, on couches, in tents, around violent and unacceptable environments, and other complex challenges just to stay alive. This crisis expands beyond Brisbane and Queensland, this is happening all over Australia. The Forgotten Women movement is doing more than raising funds and awareness, they are setting a standard that we must do better for this cohort. That’s why this year I’ll be joining many colleagues and friends in this movement and taking part in the #LiveLikeHerChallenge. While 1 night in a car does not amount to what these women face daily, it’s in numbers we have the ability to make sure that 1 more night for a women might just be their last in unsafe, uninhabitable and unacceptable situations. Please help me by donating via the secure below link. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will get a receipt automatically via email. “Everyone deserves to live with dignity and age securely in place”. 🫶🏽 Donate: https://lnkd.in/gi-Dkwz8 Teresa Reed, Nina Schrinner, Loretta Ryan, Fleur Madden, Sharon Orapeleng, Kristy Morris, Georgie Chumbley, Antonia Mercorella, Chris Parsons, Fiona Caniglia, Jackson Hills. #BeTheChange #OurWomenDeserveBetter #SmallActBigImpact #Homelessness #LLHC2024

Did you know that over 38,000 young people aged 15–24 years presented alone to a homelessness service in 2022–23? Of these young people, almost half experienced mental ill-health, and over one-third experienced domestic and family violence. Most of these young people needed short- or long-term accommodation, and most were turned away due to a lack of capacity. These statistics only scratch the surface of issues that young people experiencing homelessness face. To have statistics like this in a country like Australia is not acceptable; together, we can have a tangible impact, and now is the time to act. #wehavetodobetter #YHMD

Personal post alert... and it is a bit hard hitting ❓ Did you know that the average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is 46 for men and 42 for women... ❔ Homeless people are over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population. ❓ People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence. More than one in three people sleeping rough have been deliberately hit or kicked or experienced some other form of violence whilst homeless. People have even been set on FIRE. ❔ The statistics show that one third of care leavers become homeless in the first two years immediately after they leave care and 25% of homeless people have been in care at some point in their lives. I am not only a care leaver, but have personally been homeless and at risk of homelessness many times in my younger years – so raising money for this great cause is also somewhat personal. All donations are so very much appreciated, and I am looking forward to seeing just how much I (we) can raise this year! 🙏

Really good practical post from Andrew as always. Under the heading Practical Support : homelessness & biodiversity? I’m pleased to say that at Gresham Benevolent Fund we are supporting Crisis Changing Lives programme and personally I really like the fact that in the previous Parliament Crisis provided Secretariat services for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Homelessness. Hopefully it will do so again when the new Parliamentary term starts in early September. I was speaking with Connections at St Martins in the field. They said that the most requested items from their clients were mobile phones & laptops. These days once you have shelter; food ; medical support and the necessary IT skills you can with like mindeds set up your own Solo or Micro (1-11 employee) business or Social Enterprise with a mobile & access to a laptop and support from sympathetic Mentors like Andrew. There are 136,000 young (16-24 year old ) homeless that New Horizon are trying to help with a National Stratrgy plus an unknown number of hidden young underinvested. A real talent pool potentially. Update “ give a person a fish and they’ll eat for a day ; teach a person how to fish and they’ll eat for life”- ( which doesn’t really work these days when we poison our rivers and streams with effluent and the Midland Canals with a form of cyanide used in metal cleaning which kills the fishes🐟 !!) by giving the 136,000 phones and laptops and perhaps they could become our next generation of ….. ……Environmental Protectors.???!!! After all to be homeless in UK plc as Anthony says you have to be pretty streetwise. A task force of Name & Shame environmentalists protecting our “ Sceptrd Isle” might have a number of benefits. Whilst 32 wars rage around the globe causing massive environmental damage perhaps the Young Underinvested could be our eyes 👀 & ears 👂to ensure UK 🇬🇧 plc really does move towards Net Zero : not just “ wash ourselves in Green” After all .., “ there is no Planet 🌍 “B” T https://lnkd.in/eg33cJKh.

Judging from the last post, people want to know what to donate to people experiencing homelessness. So I made it into a basic pdf for you. Please download, enjoy, share, email out, whatever helps - anyone can donate, even if you don't have much money. It's just about thinking what people might need, and then adapting to it. Please do share it out, repost it out to your networks; would be amazing to have resources like this out there so people can be prepared the next time they encounter a rough sleeper. It could make their day. It might even save their lives. #homelessness #whattodonatetothehomeless #homelessnesshelp

Top Tip #10: Spread the word. Homelessness is more common than you might think, with an estimated 3,898 people sleeping rough across England on a single night in autumn 2023. Sharing stories raises awareness and can inspire others to help too. Word of mouth is powerful (and free!) Help us by spreading the word, talking to your friends, and encouraging others to donate and get involved. Together, we can make a difference ❤️ Visit our website to read more about what we do and how you can get involved: https://lnkd.in/dejAFVu #PassItOn #EndHomelessness #SpreadTheWord
