Griner Engineering Firm has been, well, grinding along since it began as an electrical engineering firm in St. Pete in 1968. What started as Best & Associates by Barney P. Best has changed hands and titles several times over the decades. Now its ready for its next iteration via an acquisition by Detroit-based OHM Advisors.

Disclaimer: This episode was recorded prior to the Civil and Construction Engineering Management merger on July 1st of this year. This is the reason you may hear different terms being used for the program. We are now known as Construction Engineering (CNE) at Purdue University. Arvind Raman is the Dean of Engineering at Purdue University, an exceptional individual, who is renovating Purdue's Engineering landscape with his 2030 vision. We discuss his upbringing, his new Master's in Business and Technology program, as well as why to choose Purdue and much more. Check out the episode at The Little Hammers on Spotify! I've written a new (premium) post in the series of articles that describe how engineering leaders can do more with less in the post-zero interest rate era: Doing more with less, part 3: Buy don’t build using Wardley Mapping. It describes how to use Wardley mapping to identify those parts of your application you should buy instead of building. This will free up resources to focus on building those parts of the application that provide a competitive advantage. To learn more, please read the article: https://lnkd.in/g-wQHP-Z

Hello LinkedIn Community, As news of Ballard’s restructuring spreads, I want to share that I was part of this significant change. Given the current macroeconomic challenges affecting hydrogen PEM fuel cell adoption, the extent of the reorganization makes sense, and I appreciate the cuts made across all levels. Reflecting on 3.5 years at Ballard Power Systems Inc., I feel a strong sense of gratitude for the scope and breadth of work I had the opportunity to engage in during my tenure. Thank you to my former manager, David Myers, for enabling me to contribute as a Senior Systems Mechanical Engineer on the FCMove-XD project, as well as serving as Project Manager on the FCGen-LCS Fuel Cell stack under Program Manager Ryan Blunt. The fast-paced development of the FCMove-XD was impressive, led by Oltu Goknel with teammates Jared Uramowski, Yichuan Wang, Sebastian Fiedler, Yajing Sui, and Jin Fu. Principal engineer Tegan Marie Harrower provided engineering guidance in her typical fire-hose-of-information fashion (if only I had an AI enabled mic to transpose and summarize into an encyclopedia of 'How to design a fuel cell engine'!). I experienced both successes and setbacks (and recovered from mistakes), working on engineering fixtures for shock and vibration testing and developing custom pressure control manifolds and heat exchangers with custom castings designed for flowing corrosive fluids. I also appreciated the evolving project management approaches from Norm Woo and Tarun Bedi. In the FCGen-LCS Fuel Cell Stack development, I managed engineering builds, coordinated multidisciplinary meetings, and tackled resource constraints (manpower, part and test stations) while prioritizing against other project needs. Guided by the mentorship of Ryan Blunt and excellent training from Grisel Martinez. My engineering background helped me bridge manufacturing and engineering. On smaller scopes, I also supported light and heavy rail development, exploring diverse design requirements across various applications (heavy truck, stationary power, light rail, heavy rail and bus to name a few). While layoffs are difficult, and we must allow the grief process to unfold, I feel supported by Ballard and my former coworkers. I’m now focused on adding granularity to my purpose and exploring new interests. If you know of opportunities in product management, systems engineering, or project management, please reach out. I'm open to other industries, having worked in everything from ski bindings to biotech. Let’s connect for a coffee or a quick Zoom call! If you’d like to write a LinkedIn recommendation, I’d appreciate it. To those affected by the restructure, I’m here to help if needed. Onward! PS: I am proud that a leading launch at the recent IAA is a twinned FCMove-XD demonstrator. We literally shoe-horned and were feverishly modifying the crate right up to the last shipping minute!
