❗️ “Forever chemicals” to be removed from food packaging 🥡 The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that manufacturers will cease using harmful "forever chemicals," specifically per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in food packaging products in the United States. The FDA's statement, released on February 28, marks the completion of a voluntary phase-out of PFAS-containing materials by U.S. food packaging manufacturers. This move aims to eliminate a significant source of dietary exposure to PFAS, which are synthetic chemicals resistant to water, oil, heat, and stains. PFAS, often referred to as "forever chemicals" due to their slow breakdown, have been associated with potential health risks, including disruptions in the immune system, weight gain, and decreased fertility. The voluntary phase-out process is expected to take up to 18 months to exhaust existing market supplies of PFAS-containing products. The FDA's initiative has been applauded as a positive step in protecting consumers from potentially harmful food-contact chemicals, though it is acknowledged that other sources of PFAS in the environment, such as drinking water and meat and dairy products, still exist.
