We recently hosted an inspiring, and surprisingly emotional, webinar with all of our The Helvellyn Foundation partners, looking at Managing Individual Donors 💡☺️💻 Firstly, some key learnings shared by our partners: 🧠 Make it about MORE than just donations. Bring people in for their passion, their skills, their knowledge, and their experience. That in itself is of value to organisations…and if funding follows then that’s a bonus! ⬆️ ’Wheel out the CEO’. It seems that donors appreciate a connection with the leaders of organisations, with one partner sharing that up to 30-40% of their time as CEO is spent on major donor relations. ❤️ Don’t be afraid to get PERSONAL. At the end of the day, you’re trying to build relationships with people. We heard about some brave examples from our partners, who had been willing to get emotional with donors, and seen the benefits. ✉️ Don’t turn down an INVITATION. Get along to as many events as possible, meet people, and get conversations started. Secondly, a reminder of how and why we do these webinars: ✅ We only run them when we have heard multiple partners talk about a topic of interest. ✅ We set up a meeting link and invite everyone, but the expertise is shared by our partners. ✅ Attendees come with questions, reflections, or snippets of advice to share on the topic. ✅ Where useful, we invite someone external to share their thoughts. This time, the brilliant Nick Bubb joined us 🦏 ✅ We take notes and share them across the partnerships (and now on LinkedIn) so that the wisdom can reach as many people as possible! Yesterday I spent #InternationalWomensDay with Media Trust for their Women's Voices 2024 event, where industry experts are paired with charities to tackle their particular comms challenge. I was delighted to be grouped with Sally Farr, Colin Grist and Hamish P. to spend an amazing few hours with Together As One (Aik Saath), a youth-led charity based in Slough. Here are some key takeaways (relevant to a lot of charity comms!) that came out of our discussions: 📢 Power in partnerships ↳ there’s ample opportunity for local charities to collaborate with other local organisations to increase brand awareness (and spending money!). 👑 Co-production is king ↳ what designs would appeal to an 11-25 year old? What copy would make them scan a QR code? Talk to the TA and co-produce the content. 🌊Strategy begins upstream ↳ reach out to specific orgs (e.g. professional bodies) who have direct comms with the TA (e.g. medical staff) and capture the TA early and upstream. ✌️Tackle two TAs differently: ↳ it’s tricky for any particular strategy to ‘catch all’ and can mean mixed messaging that misses the mark. Two different streams tailored to each TA can be more effective. Thank you to Media Trust for assembling the dream team and pairing us with such a fantastic charity doing phenomenal work. A lot of effort by Media Trust goes into matching the right expertise with the right charity challenge, and it meant my niche healthcare know-how helped! What a day, and what an impact this can have on communities and lives!

It’s ok to ask for help. This was something we reiterated at last week’s Gather Society event. If there’s something you need help with, ask. Because each time you will be surprised by how the people you know can help. So, here’s my ask for help. This Fall we will put on our next Gather Society event which will be more focused on professional development for women in business (~75 ppl). We are looking for a cool (maybe donated!) space to host this event at. It’ll be a combination of speakers, workshop style sessions and networking. One of the other things I also believe in is innovative solutions so the reason I’m posting here is that I suspect some of you reading this work in an office building which may have this type of space available (and potentially underused as we work more remotely) or know of a cool venue which we could look at. All ideas and connections welcome. And we love spaces with windows. What’s in it for you? You’d be helping me and the women I’m doing this with continue to grow something cool, support women in business and also be able to attend :) Your company would also be recognized!
