In the early days of electricity, simply introducing electric motors to factories did not immediately revolutionize manufacturing, much like how current AI implementations often fail to deliver transformative change. Just as early manufacturers initially placed electric motors in the same locations as their steam engines, merely substituting power sources without reimagining workflow, many organizations today are superficially applying AI technologies without fundamentally restructuring their processes. The true breakthrough came when industrialists like Henry Ford recognized that electricity enabled a complete reimagining of factory layout—allowing for linear, optimized production flows that dramatically increased efficiency. Similarly, the most significant AI-driven improvements will likely emerge not from simply overlaying AI onto existing systems, but from radically rethinking organizational structures, decision-making processes, and value creation pathways. In both technological transitions, the most profound innovations arise not from the technology itself, but from the creative organizational thinking that understands how to leverage its unique capabilities to fundamentally transform work.
