Each week we share 3 Quick Things with the staff in Student Affairs. Usually the topics center around our divisional focus areas: student basic needs, student well-being, and student career-readiness or upcoming events the team should know about. This week, we deviated a little. Here's a snippet of this week's message as our hardworking team heads into a well-deserved break period... By the very nature of our jobs, we are seen as “givers.” Givers of our time, talents, empathy, hearts. As we approach the break period, I want to encourage you to make some time to “take.” Take time for yourself. Take a look at the last year and the year ahead. Take a chance and try something new. Take time to relax and recharge. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gDzyfQwE

We are delighted to highlight the Career Networking Breakfasts at Habs. 🌟 These events have become a cornerstone of our Lower Sixth experience, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with professionals across various sectors. Most recently, students attended an enriching event where esteemed Doctors and Dentists graciously imparted their expertise and experiences to our Lower Sixth students from both schools. Since the inception of these breakfasts in 2018, they have evolved to encompass a spectrum of career pathways. Initially focusing on key areas like Medicine and Dentistry, Law, Finance, STEM and Creative and Media, we have expanded our offerings to include even more diverse fields. This term alone, students will delve into Entrepreneurship, Science and Alternatives to Medicine, Public Sector and Charities, and Degree Apprenticeships – totalling ten enriching sessions for the academic year. We have intentionally crafted these events to depart from traditional lecture formats, instead fostering intimate conversations between students and professionals. By inviting representatives from various careers within each sector, we aim to expose students to a multitude of career paths available, showcasing the flexibility of modern career trajectories. The overwhelming popularity of these events speaks volumes. Visitors consistently remark on the vibrant atmosphere and the students' eagerness to learn and engage. We encourage anyone interested in sharing their expertise and experiences to reach out and join us in shaping the future careers of our students. Let us continue to inspire and empower the next generation together. #CareerNetworking #StudentEngagement #ProfessionalDevelopment #Enrichment #Community #Ambition #ProfoundImpact

“Are you one of the med school tour guides today?” I looked up from the bathroom sink and chuckled, “You think I look the part already? In due time. It's gonna be some day ahead for us.” Jittery from a new energy drink, I merely asked some girls if this was their first rodeo too and made their acquaintances. Last month, I attended the annual pre-health conference at McGovern Medical School and participated in the airway clinic, recruitment fair, and campus tour. From role call, there were a handful of other UTD Comets, UTSA Roadrunners, SFA Lumberjacks … even some from Louisiana next door. 🚀Why go to conferences as a prospective? 1. Meet on-site admissions reps and future YOU…. whether you're exploring programs or have specific questions, everyone's there to enlighten you and enthusiastically lure you into the applicant pool. Tabling is an excellent way to learn more and with the inaugural CAA program underway soon, it is useful to get interview advice and hear what's in store in the future. 2. Hands-on career workshops: the Airway clinic was a solid extension to my shadowing and the Anesthesia 101 segment was digestible. Also learned Seldinger method for A-lines. The clip below is me squealing before struggling to intubate a baby mannequin. 3. Develop your social and hospitality skills: Exchanging life stories and ideas is a simple way to gain perspectives and pique curiosity. ⚓️Prep Tips: 1. Hydrate well and save trying new energy drinks for another setting. 2. Print out conversation starters for mingling as well as writing your own questions for reps. 3. Set a few goals to achieve during it all: meet 20 new attendees or find 3 med student vloggers, TikTokers etc. 🍪I'd also like to take a moment to plug AspiringCAA’s personal statement workshop next Monday night hosted by Sarah Whitfield (subscribe to the helpful newsletter on aspiringCAA.com!!) Stay curious and authentic
