💙 Thanks to everyone that visited our Community Fridge this week. 💙 Your visits make a real difference in our mission to reduce food waste and strengthen community bonds. 🍏 Purpose of the Community Fridge: The core purpose of our Community Fridge is to rescue fresh food from going to waste and bring our community together. 🛒 How It Works: To keep our Fridge running, we rely on your generous donations. This includes surplus from supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households, and gardens. Your contributions fuel the spirit of sharing and mutual support that defines our community. 🌐 The Community Fridge Network: We're proud to be part of the Community Fridge Network with Hubbub, joining over 300 fridges across the UK in the fight against food waste. 🚫 Not a Food Bank: It's important to note that our Community Fridge is not a food bank. Swansea has several food banks available for those in need. We are here to create a space where surplus food finds a new home and a community spirit flourishes. 🌈 Operating on Trust: The Community Fridge is for everyone, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for our environment and each other. As we move forward, let's continue this amazing journey together. When attending our Fridge, please be mindful of those around you and our local residents. We want to be able to operate within the true spirit of a Community Fridge. Please bring your own standard sized carrier bag and a suggested donation of £2.00 when you visit us. #swanseacommunityfridge #reducefoodwaste #respectothers #CommunitySupportingCommunity #sharingiscaring #swansea #foodwastewarriors #goleudy

Today, my kids took part in a Harvest Festival at their school, bringing a bag of food to support our local food bank. This tradition just reminds us the reality that many families in our community rely on these donations to make it through the week. It’s heartbreaking to know how many people, including kids, are struggling to get food on their plate, yet 1/3 of all food doesn’t make it to the plate and is wasted. Efforts by organisations like FareShare UK and local food banks are crucial, but we need broader changes to reduce waste and improve food access. 1 in 11 people globally goes to bed hungry every night 2.8billion people can't afford a healthy, nutritious diet - that’s 35% of the global population In June 2024: 14% of UK households were living in food insecurity, including 3M kids 2.5M adults reported not eating for a whole day because they couldn’t afford or get access to food #fighthunger #reducefoodwaste #supportlocalcommunities #gratefulforfood

Thank you, Nicole Machado, for the opportunity to be part of this incredible experience! It was my first time volunteering at a food drive, and the energy and dedication of everyone there truly moved me. Seeing the excitement of people coming together to donate to the local food bank really highlighted the impact we can make when we unite for a good cause. Here are a few reflections from this memorable experience and how we can carry these lessons into our daily lives and work: The Power of Teamwork: Watching everyone work side by side, each person adding their unique contribution, reminded me how much more we can achieve together than alone. It’s a great reminder that teamwork is at the heart of meaningful progress. Small Actions Make a Big Impact: Every item donated, no matter how small, contributed to the bigger picture. This is true at work as well—small, consistent actions add up. By focusing on small, impactful tasks daily, we can drive productivity and see real results over time. Resilience: Coordinating and carrying out a food drive takes dedication and persistence. When challenges arise, we need resilience to push through—whether we’re stocking shelves or tackling a big project at work. Never Giving Up: There were moments when it seemed overwhelming, but everyone kept going because they believed in the cause. In work and life, when we stay committed to our purpose, we can overcome obstacles that seemed impossible at first. Support for a Right Cause: When you’re working toward something that genuinely helps others, people naturally want to pitch in and be part of the movement. Having a clear, meaningful purpose invites others to support and uplift you, both in community efforts and professional goals. Thankful for the opportunity to contribute to something bigger than myself and for the chance to reflect on these values. Looking forward to putting them into practice every day!
This Halloween, we went Trick or Treating to restock our local Foodbank.🥫🎃 12 volunteers, knocked on over 100 doors to gather 85 kilograms of food donations in less than 3 hours! The problem 🚨 With the rising cost of living crisis, the demand for Foodbanks is also increasing. In the UK, an estimated 7.2 million adults and 2.7 million children experienced food insecurity in June 2024 (source: https://shorturl.at/VrG65). The solution 💡 My ghoul friends and I got together to tackle the problem of food insecurity in a lighthearted way - We pulled out our spooky best outfits and went Trick or Treating to collect food donations in Cathays, Cardiff’s student central and Canton, a residential neighbourhood. Both neighbourhoods were welcoming, generous and pleasantly surprised when we asked for food donations instead of treats. The Impact 🏆 We gather just over 85 kilograms of food that will provide 8 local people in crisis with 3 days of food supply. This is not a lot, but it's a start. I encourage you to share this story within your networks to inspire more people to take local action within their communities. The Learnings 📝 - We often overestimate what we can do as a society and underestimate what we can do as a small group of individuals. 🤝 - Owing to my recent project management qualification, I systematically planned, delivered & measured this campaign with a blueprint for scalability 📈 - The power of community - My favourite part of the campaign is knocking on doors, talking to strangers and getting them excited about donating. On one occasion, a resident followed us down the street to donate additional packets of Jaffa Cakes they found in the kitchen! 🙌 Thank you Sheeraz Gulsher, Lauren Kay-Lambert and People Like Us for recognising this campaign and inviting me to speak about it at one of your events last year. A massive thank you to workplaces like Innovate UK and Innovate UK Business Connect that encourage their employees to take on voluntary work to positively impact the community. Alan Cowie and Maria Campbell Fran McIntyre thanks for approving my voluntary leave, it didn’t go to waste. 🤗 None of this would have been possible without the help of our volunteers - Harshita Manti Siddhesh Desai Agnes Wamagui Jonathan Rhys Sullivan Stanzee Machado Rhys Pewtner, Jasper Pewtner, Harry Pewtner, Dan Katz 👏

Georgia Main Food Group Limited is leading the charge in reducing food waste—and they’re doing it through action, not just donations. In partnership with the Immigrant Link (ILCS), Georgia Main staff recently spent a day volunteering to pack and distribute nutritious food hampers for families in need. This experience brought them face-to-face with the people and communities they’ve been supporting through their food recovery program. Since partnering with FoodMesh in 2020, Georgia Main has diverted 2.4 million kg of unsold food—equivalent to more than 4 million meals—to charitable organizations. Read all about it in our latest post on the Quirky Pear blog: https://lnkd.in/gg7QKks6 This is the kind of leadership we need to fight hunger and reduce environmental impact. By not only donating unsold food but also stepping onto the frontlines, Georgia Main is helping to build a stronger, more sustainable future for everyone. A huge thank you to ILCS for their tireless work, and to the Georgia Main team for going above and beyond! 💡 Is your business ready to take action against food waste and make a difference in your community? The US is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, yet the wealth inequity gap continues to widen, the middle class seems to be disappearing, the cost of living expense increases is outpacing rise in wages, and, and, and... the list goes on. All of these "ands" are creating multiple levels of insecurity-- food insecurity, housing insecurity, education insecurity, wage insecurity. I know several of my friends Christopher Morris, CUDE, CCUFC and Mark Volz, CUDE, CCM who continue to give of their resources and time at these food pantries in Madison. What if each of us were for 30 days to give up "something" that we enjoy (i.e. Starbucks, eating out weekly) and instead donate either that money or goods in kind to our local food pantries? And then once you have figured out that you can probably do without one or two things of small cost in your life, continue to donate that money! Or even maybe go a day without eating anything and provide the money equivalent of meals for that one day to food banks and pantries...and oh by the way it might give you a small "taste" of what it is like not to have food to eat and how that impacts you not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Use the link below to see what the food insecurity looks like in your community. https://lnkd.in/e6HVa2GP FYI, In my small rural county in White County Tennessee, 16.3% of the population are food insecure- 4,480 people. #foodinsecurity #creditunions
It's been one week since a coalition of 36 Dane County food pantries released a letter to the community and held a press conference at the Capitol. We came together to sound an alarm about the rising number of people facing food insecurity and the need for both immediate support and longer-term solutions to the challenges of distributing enough food to meet the growing need. You can get involved in building a community where our neighbors don't have to experience hunger. 🍽️ Ever wondered about the difference between a food bank and a food shelf? Let's break it down! 🏦 Food Bank: Think of it as a large warehouse that collects, stores, and distributes food to various community organizations like shelters, soup kitchens, and pantries. Food banks often work on a regional or national level, serving a wide area and collaborating with food producers, retailers, and donors to gather surplus food. 🛒 Food Shelf: On the other hand, a food shelf is typically a smaller-scale operation located within a community or neighborhood. It directly serves individuals and families in need by providing them with groceries and essential food items. Food shelves rely heavily on local donations and volunteer efforts to keep their shelves stocked and support their community members. Both play critical roles in combating hunger and food insecurity, but they operate in slightly different ways to serve their communities effectively. Whether you're donating to a food bank or volunteering at a food shelf, your contribution makes a real difference in the lives of those facing hunger.
