With states considering new limits on direct democracy, I thought it’d be a good time to share my peer-reviewed article on the subject. Broadly, it demonstrates how direct democracy has helped preserve capital punishment throughout much of the U.S. by strengthening legislatures’ responsiveness to public opinion. #publicpolicy #statepolitics #statistics #americanpolitics #publicopinion #polling

My entire life experience has led me to this pivotal moment. Our challenges aren't confined to housing, climate change, policing, immigration, the NHS, or local government. Increasingly, people realise that to secure our collective futures and restore confidence in our politicians and Westminster party politics, we need a radical upgrade and reset of our 17th-century system of democracy. Are we a truly representative democracy when a minority of votes, say 36% as predicted for Labour currently, can deliver overwhelming parliamentary majorities? What would an improved democracy look like? How would it work, and what are the best alternatives? Is the balance of power between the executive and citizens appropriate? Do we need to devolve more power away from Westminster? Can our current system of democracy meet the essential challenges of the climate emergency, the global financial crisis and the collapse in public trust in democratic institutions and policies? These are just some of the critical questions we need to address. As an eclectic group of activists and community organisers who have never previously worked together before, such as Clare Farrell and Nick Gardham are coming together to explore our respective struggles, strategise, and engage in this crucial conversation. The outcome is we all agree that our separate struggles are, in fact, one struggle. To help communities face the enormous challenges confronting both people and the planet, we now need a new politics that is grassroots, ethical, accountable, and capable of forging a new democratic reform movement. The ideological dogmatism of the 20th century must be abandoned in favour of what works. Intolerance is increasing as a consequence of a profound empathy deficit. We've witnessed the culture of global businesses lobbying MPs and Ministers, leading to unprecedented political corruption. Our first-past-the-post voting system is now an obstacle to progress on various hugely complex issues. The future is arriving fast, and we are spectacularly unprepared for it. I can't say for certain that this approach will work, but I can tell you that when ordinary people come together and have the information they need, they can change the course of human history. With apathy on the rise and many ordinary British people feeling angry, confused, and dispirited, we have chosen to offer new ways of organising and leadership accountability in the absence of any realistic and credible alternatives that aren't mired in the old-school way of doing things. Perhaps we are all dreamers, but we are not the only ones...
