What story are you telling yourself? . . I spent the weekend at the Archangel Summit. The theme of the conference was change your story change your destiny and it made me reflect back to when I first started in law. I remembered not always being comfortable with the workplace culture. I remember being told “I just have to suck it up” or “I just need to grow a thicker skin” or “you need to figure out how to be part of the boys club” And that’s the story I started out with. The story that read I wasn’t good enough to fit in simply based on who I am. Well that story went out the window real fast. I became a lawyer at 40 and I’ve already had a lifetime of not living with authenticity and being told that I was never good enough to become a lawyer. But you see, I did not have the energy or the desire to continue that story. So I chose not to play the game and I still succeeded. Fast-forward and I’m happy to say that I’m not in a workplace culture that requires me to be different in order to succeed; but I also know there are a lot of women lawyers out there who still believe that they have to change their story if they’re going to fit in and belong in the legal profession. That for some reason they can’t be their true authentic selves if they want to succeed. So for those of you who have read this far because perhaps my post has resonated with you. I will leave you with this: Remember the person you wanted to become before you were in indoctrinated?
