A new paper with Stephen Brosnan and Jane Bourke published in the Economic and Social Review just before Christmas on the effects of the research impact agenda on publicly funded research centres and the wider research system in Ireland. Based on original qualitative data, the paper argues that current approaches take a narrow view of research impacts, based predominantly on demonstrating economic impacts, and this threatens academic autonomy, rewards instrumental research, and may contribute to a ‘sensationalist’ approach to evidencing impacts. https://lnkd.in/eUh6DMeC

When reading this exellent article by Tobin Smith from the AAU, on cannot but agree how important it is for all countries, as for the superpower of science, to fund basic research graciously and to embrace international collaboration with confidence. Even in areas of competition among nations, ignorance of what others do, may lead to false decisions. For a small country this is even more fatal. Now let us hope that in Europe, as well as in the US, top research gets a fair treatment. Horizon Europe should be doubled, just as Finland to fund universities when increasing annually the RDI funding to reach the 4% of GDP by 2030.

It was great to welcome Professor Irene Tracey, Dr David McBeth, Professor Ashutosh Tiwari FREng, Martin McHugh, Mike Wright and Professor Lou Cordwell OBE to Parliament for our Select Committee's first session on innovation, growth and the regions. The Government's first mission is economic growth, and growth was top of my agenda when I ran to be Chair of the Science Committee. Science, innovation and technology are fundamental to sustainable growth, but R&D activity is uneven across the country. We want to understand the reasons for that and what steps we could take as a country to make sure all our regions can play their part in the economy of the future. This week's session explored universities' roles as engines of regional growth, focusing on the impact of spin-outs and commercialising research, and how to extend support to areas lacking major academic institutions. We also heard about the successes of the Catapult innovation model in creating regional jobs and boosting economies, while also identifying areas for improvement. It was exciting to hear of the vast potential of regional innovation to grow our economy and raise living standards from Penzance to Perth.
