Practice what you preach - good example from this morning ⬇️ I just had the chance to participate in the Impact Day Expo Brief for companies by Kätlyn Remmelg 🌍, as Havu Solutions will have a seat at the event. And you know what? Impact Day truly practices what they preach. No fluff, no over-the-top statements – just clear, straightforward guidance on what to do and what not to do. These are just some of the things that were mentioned but not common features in other events in my point of view: - Only vegan food at the event🥗 - No alcohol 🍸 - Don't give away bottled water - water available at the event 🚰 - Don't do single-use products ♻️ Not sure if I heard correctly but the public transportation in Tallinn is for free?! On Saturday, I visited the Attica Green Expo, an exhibition with cutting-edge ideas for sustainable living. It was amazing to see how municipalities across Greece teach citizens the green habits we all need to adopt. The most important part was the games for the kids that aimed to emphasize the importance of teaching sustainable habits from a young age. While I was there, I had insightful conversations with companies driving these public efforts, and we shared ideas on how we as consultants can help them achieve their goals in digital transformation. 🌍✨ Yesterday, 05 June 2024, I had the privilege of attending the National Trade Delegation from Slovenia to Rotterdam event at BlueCity (010). It was an incredible experience, filled with enriching conversations and connections with a diverse group of individuals, including mayors, politicians, investors, professors from universities, and professionals with decades of experience in the circular built environment, energy, and food sectors from both the Netherlands and Slovenia. The whole stakeholder community was gathered in one place for 11 hours, creating a unique atmosphere of collaboration and innovation. The openness and willingness to share experiences, advice, and feedback were truly inspiring. The delegates' commitment to radical collaboration and their journey mirrored the challenges we face today, making their insights invaluable. The presentations and storytelling sessions were enlightening, offering practical solutions to the struggles we encounter. I am thrilled by the enthusiastic responses and the many "yes in principle" agreements and interests for collaboration. This event has not only deepened our connections but also strengthened our resolve to drive systemic and disruptive change in the market to address the climate-housing crisis. It is tough, and we need tough people who dare to change. A special thanks to the Slovene Dutch Business Platform - SDBP and Holland Circular Hotspot for providing the opportunity for connection, communication, and radical collaboration. Additionally, I would like to acknowledge the representatives from EIT initiatives such as EIT Climate-KIC, our angel investor, and EIT New European Bauhaus for their invaluable contributions. Together, we pave the way towards sustainable solutions and even the ambitious goal of building Lunar Habitats. Under the auspices of ASviS - Alleanza Italiana per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile (one of Italy's pre-eminent associations for sustainability initiatives) today we held a 5 hour session on what we have learned from launching Italy's Sustainability Academy (on the back of our work with managing the academies of over 421 cities around the world). Some key takeaways: Local municipalities and cities are far more effective at creating and implementing initiatives that change citizen behaviour than previously thought. Sustainability education (across the spectrum - from helping small business owners save electricity and water to supporting entrepreneurs think of sustainable business models to assisting families live a better life at home, etc) has an enormous influencer effect (if your neighbours spend less on energy you will also copy them). Embracing sustainability in a local city is actually an election winner. A better quality of life for residents - even after taking into consideration initial resistance to change - leads to a higher satisfaction amongst residents. Implementing sustainable practices (e.g. converting roads into cycling lanes, etc) leads to enormous decreases in infrastructure expenses for the city as well as increse in turover for small businesses, from local cafes to small shops. The most effective way of "educating" the public around sustainability is actually NOT to speak of sustainability but rather to address real world daily problems that people have on the back of sustainable options. There are enormous benefits from shifting people towards a more sustainable lifestyle: this one is difficult to measure but anecdotal evidence suggests a shift towards people actually sharing more of their change stories which increases community involvement and connections. During my Erasmus semester in Sicily, I immersed myself in its vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and academic challenges. While the experience was enriching, it also gave me a more nuanced perspective on sustainability. Sicily, like many regions, faces challenges in sustainability, but it also offers valuable lessons: - Local Traditions: The emphasis on seasonal, local food at markets reminded me of the benefits of short supply chains, even though modern convenience often competes with these traditions. - Community Spirit: The strong sense of community in public spaces and festivals showed the importance of social well-being, even if environmental practices aren't always a priority. - Room for Growth: Observing daily habits and infrastructure made me realize that achieving sustainability often requires balancing tradition with modern solutions. This experience taught me that sustainability is complex and deeply tied to local realities, inspiring me to think critically about what sustainable practices could look like in different contexts. #ErasmusExperience #Sustainability #ESG #CulturalExchange
