Earlier this week, I narrowly avoided a collision with a motorbike, an experience that left me feeling shaken and apprehensive. Reflecting on this close call, my mind turned to a project I recently completed , that I dubbed “Pikipiki Manenoz," which centered around motorbike safety. Drawing upon principles of human-centered design and the socio-ecological model, this project explored interventions aimed at addressing the pervasive issue of motorbike accidents. Looking forward, I now recognize the potential impact of the strategies proposed in the project. Despite the chaos and sadness often associated with motorbike accidents, I believe there are opportunities for effective intervention and control. Do you think there is? Infrastructure Malta's current plans for Msida will: ✅ Increase traffic in the long term (due to induced demand) ✅ Increase noise ✅ Increase pollution and respiratory ilnesses ✅ Further fragment Msida and make it more difficult to navigate by foot and by bike ✅ Make Msida a more unpleasant place to live While many other cities have realised that building flyovers and wider roads to accomodate traffic does not work and are now demolishing such grandiose projects, IM continues to follow this outdated strategy. We need real and contemporary solutions to traffic, not "solutions" from the 1950s! The KTP proposal (video below) is better placed to accomodate alternative mobility options, while giving a much-needed public space back to the community. If executed properly, such a proposal would both reduce traffic and contribute to reducing car dependency in the long term. And (as a bonus!), it will contribute to flood management in an area prone to flooding. After all, trees and green areas are a much better flood management solution than complex drainage systems can ever be 🌼
