In response to this article, I was asked today why the UK is "lagging behind" on access to cannabis as medicine. I replied that it is and it isn't. We have the most flexible and progressive system for prescribing cannabis anywhere in the world but only about 40,000 prescribed patients. I think the existing businesses have done a very poor job of creating awareness but they have been hamstrung by an unreliable supply chain. Once we have local cultivation sites across the country, then we will see the market take off. We should be looking at 500,000 prescribed patients within the next few years. #cannabis #drugspolicy

This is what a recent #study #published in the Journal of Cannabis Research hopes to #address as a team of #researchers led by the University of Michigan Medical School investigated the #methods by which everyday #citizens receive their #information regarding cannabis, specifically pertaining to its #legality, which comes on the heels of its #classification from a #ScheduleI to #ScheduleIII drug recently being #recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services. For the study, the researchers conducted a #survey of 1,161 participants ages 18 and up regarding their cannabis use within the past year, reasons for #use, and the sources where they obtain their information regarding cannabis. The #participants consisted of 51 percent #women and 49 percent #men with 27 percent reporting using cannabis within the past year. Regarding their #sources of information, 35.6 percent reported it was from #family and #friends, 33.7 percent reported it was from #websites, 9.3 percent from #healthcare #providers, 8.6 percent from #employees where the cannabis was purchased, and 4.7 percent was from #government #agencies. The study concludes by saying, “In this #nationally #representative survey, we show that most #people draw #information about cannabis from friends and family or online, with very few #consulting their healthcare provider or #government agencies. As cannabis #accessibility and $legality is increasing, there is a strong need for better #clinician #education, #public #outreach strategies, and improved #communication between patients and clinicians about cannabis.” This study comes as #recreational and #medical cannabis continues to be #legalized across the United States, with only four states (Idaho, Wyoming, Kansas, and South Carolina) classifying cannabis as “fully illegal”. What new #connections between cannabis and sources of information will researchers make in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science! Establishing a new Schedule VI and an Office of Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoid Control is essential to creating a coherent, patient-focused cannabis policy. r. Peter Grinspoon, a medical doctor and well-known cannabis expert, wrote in his public comment: “I am a primary care physician and cannabis specialist at Harvard Medical School. I have written and spoken extensively about medicinal cannabis during my twenty-five-year career as a doctor. I strongly believe that cannabis should be descheduled not rescheduled, as it is markedly less harmful than tobacco or alcohol (which, as you know, are descheduled) and as it has fairly vast therapeutic use in [alleviating] the the cruel symptoms of various diseases (chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety, nausea and vomiting, weight loss). The harms of cannabis have been greatly exaggerated during the War on Drugs. While not harmless (e.g., should not be used by patients with a history of psychosis, pregnant women or teens, etc.), it is certainly considerably less harmful than ALL of the medications that are currently in Schedule 3 and less harmful than many, if not most, of the medications that are less rigorously scheduled (e.g., Ambien, NSAIDS, etc.). It has been almost 11 years since #colorado started adult use sales. Now the vest majority of americans live in a state where cannabis is legal for medical or adult-use. We are starting to get reliable data. Data about consumer behavior is really important. New Frontier Data conducting a survey on the difference between people that use cannabis medically versus recreationally. They found that medical patients are typically are the most loyal customers and spend far more than adult use consumers. Adult use consumers are the most likely to obtain their cannabis for free and the most likely to spend under $50 when they do buy cannabis. Medical patients are the most likely to spend $400+ when they purchase cannabis. This reflects the need of medical patients to have consistent access to the same products.
