Explore Romania's Ponor Cave with us! Winner of 'Best Digital Twin for Education, People’s Choice' and the 'Digital Twin Pioneer' awards at the 2023 Digital Twin Awards, this incredible experience, created by Scanbox - Integrated Visual Solutions, takes you on a tour of the intricate tunnels and facets of the largest karst complex in Romania. As you might assume, scanning a vast and rugged environment like this comes with a unique set of challenges. The team at Scanbox explains; "The main challenges were the ones relating to the actual space we were trying to capture: the cave can be an unwelcoming environment, characterised by darkness, high humidity and extremes: either too narrow passageways or very high ceilings, reflective surfaces on the ground and high details that the camera cannot reach, rugged terrain both horizontally and vertically, uneven surface areas, unmovable obstacles and entire parts accessible only through avens or led by professional climbers and the list goes on. Other challenges were in working with the sensitive equipment and securing the camera, trying to make sure the lights – LED panels, ambient light – were used to set the right mood and reveal each natural detail, without overwhelming the space or making it seem too artificial and being careful to protect the delicate cave formations from our presence and to not disturb the “locals”, the bats that make this space their home. Another more personal challenge was in changing our own perspective or prejudice on caves: from places of unknown dangers lurking in the dark to what they truly are – ecosystems of vast beauty that have represented shelter and community for the human species for thousands of years." ‘Our best tool to drive change is visual storytelling’ My 5th and final graphic from SailGP's #ChampionsforChange event in New York captured a stunning talk from Shireen Rahimi - underwater filmmaker, National Geographic Explorer, and founder of Lightpalace Productions The power of storytelling was in full effect as the audience was invited to reflect on the stark reality of where we are headed, the pressing need to restructure our economies, and to find new stories that reshape how we as a species treat the natural world on which we depend. You know, The Big Stuff. ... And there are solutions out there - the potential of blue carbon or climate friendly aquaculture of regenerative ocean farming (think protein-rich, seaweeds and seafood that needs no feed, fertiliser or freshwater) Its incredible, its all there for the making, and where human ingenuity meets caring values, a better future actually is reachable. ⛵ As Shireen said, “imagine if governments and markets could relate to nature in the same way that SailGP does through its Impact League?” What if restoration, preservation, and the principles of community and equity that underpin that were the metrics for success and reward? 🤷♂️ Because at the end of the day, this is about survival - which, surely, is the ultimate metric. If you’ve been following my posts over the last few days you’ll get a sense of how moved I was by the talks I visualised that week. I’ve got two pretty small kids, and two pretty old parents and while I’m excited by the possibilities of new technology, more and more I'm just as amazed by the small wonders of nature all around us. I find myself just watching insects do their thing and think ‘it would take humans FOREVER to make that - and if we did, we would be SO pleased with ourselves.’ 😂 So proud to be working with SailGP on Champions for Change. Have you heard about the "Zone Out Competition"? I’ve only recently learned about it, and it's fascinating! In South Korea, a country known for its intense, productivity-focused lifestyle, a unique event has been happening for the last 10 years: the Spaceout Competition. Initiated by artist WoopsYang, who personally experienced the 'benefits' of burnout, this competition encourages participants to do nothing and simply zone out. Participants are judged on their ability to maintain a steady heart rate and appear the most relaxed. The contest lasts for about 90 minutes. However, falling asleep leads to disqualification. Don't worry, you can always participate in the "Power-Nap Competition" (a topic for another time, maybe).
