🌱 Key Updates to the Environmental Planting Methodology! 🌱 Last week, the Clean Energy Regulator released the new Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology, a significant milestone for carbon markets in Australia. The The Carbon Farming Foundation has done a fantastic job summarising the key changes, which include: 🌳 Simplified requirements for project registration. 📏 Streamlined measurement processes to reduce complexity. 🌿 Expanded eligibility for mixed-species plantings. 🛠️ Enhanced flexibility in land preparation methods. 📜 Updates to reporting and auditing requirements. 📰 Read their detailed summary here: https://lnkd.in/gfBSaEvS These updates aim to make carbon farming more accessible while driving greater biodiversity and carbon sequestration benefits. We’re excited to see how this shapes the future of natural capital investments in Australia 🌏 #CarbonFarming #EnvironmentalPlanting #NaturalCapital #CarbonMarkets #CarbonCredits #Sustainability #Biodiversity

Last week, we saw the highly anticipated new Reforestation Method released in time for 2025 planting commencement 🌳 This updated method, officially titled Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings 2024, replaces the 2014 version, which expired on 30th September 2024. So, what’s changed? While much remains the same, a few key updates could benefit participants in a big way: 🌱 Updated guidance for infill planting 📄 More detailed planning and record-keeping 🌿 Partial relaxation of spacing requirements 🕒 Project activities can start earlier 🍃 Allowance for harvest of seeds from your planting We’ve broken it all down in our latest article, where CFF’s Samuel Bean discusses why this method matters and how the changes have made it easier to implement: https://lnkd.in/gfBSaEvS Also, in a couple of weeks we’ll be hosting an exclusive webinar to walk you through the new method and answer your questions. The good news is that there are places actively investing in technology and solutions that result in cleaner soil and cleaner water—like Seneca County. These proactive community leaders have awarded local farms with $1.6 million in funding to implement soil health practices as part of the New York State Climate Resilient Farming (CRF) Grant Program. The bad news is that, even with money pouring into these initiatives for years, harmful algal blooms have still developed across nearly every lake in the Finger Lakes region in 2024. There’s still work to do. That’s why we offer compact, affordable, and practical solutions to treat water on-site, managing wastewater nutrients BEFORE they enter the ecosystem. Together, we can keep our water clean and clear for everyone. #ECONSE #FixingWater #Sustainability #Greenhouse #Farming #Phosphorous #WaterHealth #Wastewater #WastewaterTreatment #AlgaeBloom #FingerLakes

Scarborough Seaweed Farming Firm, Seagrown, has won a competition staged by RWE to find innovative solutions to enhance biodiversity at wind farms. Seagrown have been able to adapt their seaweed planting system and the groundbreaking collaboration will explore the potential of seaweed in restoring marine ecosystems. This collaboration stems from RWE's global "Co-use Competition," which sought innovative solutions to enhance biodiversity and promote co-existence with other sea users in offshore wind farms.

The EU Council have given the green light to a regulation establishing the first EU-level certification framework for permanent carbon removals, carbon farming and carbon storage in products. Its voluntary should encourage carbon removal and soil emission reduction activities in the EU. Could this finally kickstart the bio economy for construction materials in Ireland. Tillage struggles in competition with dairy for land currently, hence vested interest in maintaining the status quo in Irish agriculture. Could capturing the carbon from rapidly grown crops and storing it for 35+ years together with forestry start to generate greater value for farmers? #bioeconomy #construction https://lnkd.in/eRGchsf4

This article hits the nail on the head when it comes to Agrivoltaics. "Agrivoltaics — the practice of sharing energy and food production on the same plot of land — can include a range of agricultural practices, such as farming, beekeeping, agroforestry, aquaculture and solar grazing. Solar grazing represents the bulk of the agrivoltaic industry, with over 200 grazing sites representing 50,000 acres of land, according to Jordan Macknick, lead energy-water-land analyst for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory." We must deploy solar at scale and be sustainable in our approach at the same time. Pairing farming with solar and native prairies is a no-brainer. Solar grazing provides soil health benefits and reduces or eliminates mowing. Prairies are another disappearing landscape and if we are setting aside thousands of acres for solar farms, why not enforce solar developers to install native prairies when installing their projects?
Under a Texas sun, agrivoltaics offer farmers a new way to make money

Even though arid, extensive regions dominate the Australian land mass (more than 75% of the continent is classified as rangeland), knowledge of carbon storage and sequestration in such regions is sparse. We reviewed the literature and found a lack of robust measured soil organic carbon (SOC) data in rangeland environments. We also found that: (1) Sowing more productive grasses or legumes in existing grass pastures generally increased SOC stocks; (2) Prolonged periods of high stocking rates was linked with SOC loss; (3) Destocking or exclusion of grazing resulted in small gains in SOC, especially in degraded soils; (4) Conversion from cropping to permanent pasture improved sequestration, subject to management history; (5) Rotational grazing had negligible impact on SOC stocks relative to continuous grazing; and (6) Waterponding initially increased SOC stocks, but there was a lack of evidence for SOC persistence post waterponding. #soilcarbon #carbon #netzero #climateaction #mitigation #carbonremovals #sustainability #livestock
