What is the natural capital market? 🍃🪱 The natural capital market recognises the value of nature, such as clean water, healthy soils, and biodiversity, which are often overlooked in traditional accounting. It provides financial rewards for protecting and restoring natural ecosystems. For landholders, this means an opportunity to earn extra income, safeguard their environment, and make their land more sustainable and resilient for the future. In our recent article we discuss the growing interest in the nature capital market and how it relates to carbon credits, read it here: https://lnkd.in/gHQEFZjG #farming #sustainableagriculture #climateaction #climatechange #sustainablefarming #environmentalsustainability #carboncredits

The move towards peat-free #horticulture is driven by environmental concerns, as peat extraction contributes to carbon emissions and habitat degradation. However, the transition presents practical difficulties. While some progress has been made, a significant portion of the industry remains reliant on peat-based products for growing and propagation. Industry experts have raised concerns about the readiness of the sector to meet proposed #peatban deadlines. They argue that a phased approach is necessary to allow for the development and adoption of reliable peat-free alternatives that meet the needs of #growers and consumers alike. According to IPBES, human actions have significantly altered 75% of the Earth’s land surface, including 85% of wetland areas. How can we all be the #Generationrestoration? *Use purchasing power to support only brands that sustainably source materials *Collect kitchen waste to use as compost in gardens or balconies or contribute to composting schemes. *Learn about sustainable agriculture practices that preserve soil health, retain water and minimize erosion. *Adopt ecosystem-based approaches for pest control in gardens. *Pressure elected officials at all levels of the government to enact policies that support ecosystem restoration and conservation. *Learn more about how blue ecosystems underpin human well-being and how one-quarter of all marine life is fostered in coral reefs. *Volunteer time and labour and contribute to rehabilitating degraded landscapes and ecosystems.

Water harvesting earthworks and ponds are essential for drought-stricken landscapes🌧️. These systems help capture and store rainwater, reducing the impact of droughts and providing a reliable water source for plants and wildlife🌿🐦. By holding water in the landscape, these earthworks increase soil moisture, improve groundwater recharge, and prevent erosion💧. Additionally, they help create microclimates that can support a diversity of plant species and increase overall biodiversity🌎. Investing in water harvesting systems can help mitigate the effects of droughts, support local ecosystems, and promote sustainable land management practices🌱. #WaterHarvesting #DroughtResilience #SustainableLandscapes

The environment has a natural absorptive, self-cleansing capacity. However, if this is exceeded, biodiversity is lost, livelihoods are affected, natural food sources (e.g. fish) are damaged and high clean-up costs result. Environmental damage is leading to increased natural disasters, with floods increasing where deforestation and soil erosion are preventing natural water attenuation. #EnvironmentalManagement

🌊 Introducing Seawater Solutions – BlueTech Competition 2024🌊 We're thrilled to introduce Seawater Solutions, an innovative coastal engineering company from Scotland! 🇬🇧 Seawater Solutions is on a mission to restore and build coastal wetlands, including mangrove forests and saltmarshes, across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Their integrated operations not only rejuvenate these vital ecosystems but also create carbon credits and regenerative feedstocks essential for the green transition. By farming these coastal ecosystems, they produce raw materials that replace harmful industry ingredients, from livestock feed to building materials. Their wetland feedstocks are carbon-negative and packed with high-value properties, such as bio-active compounds for feeds and fire-retardant properties for construction. With over 8 projects spanning 50,000 hectares, Seawater Solutions collaborates with governments, organizations, and communities on the frontlines of climate change, making a tangible impact on our planet. Stay tuned for inspiring stories from our BlueTech Competition Cohort I. #BlueTechCompetition #BlueTechCompetition2024 Seawater Solutions Yanik Nyberg #MaritimeInnovation #OceanInnovation #CoastalRestoration #ClimateAction #GlobalImpact #StartupAccelerator #SustainableInnovation #SustainabilityLeaders #TechForGood #BlueEconomy #CymothoeInitiative

🌍 Nature’s Water Engineers: Ecosystems and Water Conservation 💧🌿 Did you know that ecosystems are some of the most powerful tools we have for water conservation? 🌳🌾 From forests to wetlands, these natural systems act as nature’s water managers, providing essential services that sustain life and protect our resources. Here’s how ecosystems contribute to water conservation: ✅ Forests: Act as natural filters by cleaning rainwater, reducing runoff, and recharging groundwater aquifers. ✅ Wetlands: Function like sponges, absorbing floodwaters, mitigating droughts, and filtering out pollutants. ✅ Grasslands: Prevent erosion, ensuring fertile soil and better water retention. 💡 Why does this matter? Protecting these ecosystems isn’t just about preserving biodiversity. It’s about ensuring that clean and reliable water is available for communities, industries, and agriculture—now and for future generations. The cost of ignoring these natural systems? 🌊 Increased water treatment costs, greater vulnerability to floods, and worsening water scarcity. Investing in ecosystem restoration means investing in our water security! Let’s protect and restore our ecosystems to build a sustainable future. 🌱💦 How can we all contribute to ecosystem health? Share your ideas below! #WaterConservation #EcosystemServices #NatureBasedSolutions 🌎

Good to see additional publications regarding the ability of mangroves to store carbon. Essential if governments are restoring, preserving and conserving mangrove forests and developing new carbon credit exchanges based upon these investments. And local coastal communities can be paid serious dollars to do the hard, physical work. If carbon storage is so important, and mangroves provide this and other eco-services, let's expand micro-economies around this important species. Women-driven and owned mangrove ecosystem management economies. .
Four decades of data indicate that planted mangroves stored up to 75% of the carbon stocks found in intact mature stands

Evidence that the approach helps to save trees, preserve ecosystems and reduce carbon emissions is often hard to come by. But it can succeed if it’s done right, says an economist. #InternationalDayofClimateAction

The Fish Friendly Water Extraction Project isn’t just a name, it reflects a commitment to protecting native fish in South Queensland while ensuring efficient water use for farms and communities. Why it's fish friendly: 🔸 Physical barriers for protection: Modern fish screens prevent fish and debris from being drawn into pumps or channels. 🔸 High standards: These types of screens meet rigorous design specifications, protecting over 90% of native fish. 🔸 Dual benefits: They support biodiversity and business by keeping fish in their habitats and debris out of infrastructure. 🔸 Tailored for every site: Each screen is customised to suit specific conditions, ensuring effectiveness and sustainability. The project’s name reflects the intent to safeguard rivers, promote sustainable management practices, and maintain healthy ecosystems. With more screens in use, we’re seeing healthier rivers, thriving farms, and a future where water extraction and conservation work hand in hand. #FishFriendly #EcoInnovation #HealthyRivers #SustainableFarming #ProtectNativeFish #DCCEEW @WaterQLD
