We’re really proud and excited to have been selected as a Finalist in the prestigious “Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management”, organised by LetsRecycle.com / RoarB2B. Our entry, entitled “PFAS Forever Chemicals – Search, Capture & Destroy” is one of seven (yikes!) finalists in the ‘Innovation of the Year’ category. Our development of specialised activated carbon grades specifically targeting this family of harmful and persistent organic pollutants, together with our optimised REACT-Sys™ thermal reactivation process that completely destroys the PFAS molecules adsorbed onto the spent activated carbon, seems like it really impressed the Expert Judging Panel.   Our key message it that these ‘forever chemicals’ are no longer ‘forever’ with CPL/Puragen technology! We can’t wait for the Awards Luncheon, in London on 16th May, where we look forward to meeting and networking with the other finalists. 🏋️😋 "Ingredients to cook bio-based plastics!" 👨🔬🔬 Researchers at The University of Manchester have achieved a significant breakthrough in using cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, to convert carbon dioxide (CO₂) into valuable bio-based materials. Their work focuses on enhancing the production of citramalate, a precursor for renewable plastics like Perspex or Plexiglas. By optimizing key process parameters, the team achieved a 23-fold increase in citramalate production, marking a substantial step toward sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel-derived products. ♻️🌿 This advancement not only contributes to the development of eco-friendly plastics but also supports the vision of a carbon-neutral circular bioeconomy. It started with wastewater. What most see as the end of the line, Michelle Ruiz saw as the beginning of a bold experiment. As an oil and gas engineer, she often worked with wastewater treatment facilities, watching as nutrient-rich streams were discarded as waste. But Michelle saw potential in what others overlooked. Could this byproduct fuel something extraordinary? Hyfé exists to make waste the new crude. By pioneering the bio-refining of food processing waste into alternative carbon sources, Hyfé transforms what was once discarded into sustainable chemicals, materials, fuels, and foods. It’s a circular solution that reduces reliance on petroleum, with the power to redefine industries. Backed by $11 million in funding from top investors like MIT’s Engine Ventures and Synthesis Capital, Hyfé is scaling rapidly. The company’s approach has also garnered support from the Department of Energy’s Chain Reaction Innovations grant program, positioning it as a leader in sustainable innovation. I recently participated in a comprehensive webinar focused on “Climate Finance for Fast Action on Methane Reduction and Just Transition in the Waste Sector.” This insightful session explored crucial strategies for financing methane reduction initiatives in waste management, emphasizing the importance of sustainable funding mechanisms for environmental projects. The webinar delved into innovative approaches for reducing methane emissions from waste facilities, including advanced biological treatment methods, landfill gas capture systems, and organic waste processing. Key discussions centered on implementing environmentally responsible waste management practices while ensuring a fair transition for affected communities and workers. The session also highlighted the critical role of financial instruments in supporting sustainable waste management infrastructure, particularly in developing regions. 🌍 Our latest article has just been published in "Resources, Recycling and Conservation". In this study, we delve into the climate impacts of traditional methanol production methods via Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) compared to innovative alternatives that convert plastic waste into methanol, namely "Gasiforming" and "Electriforming". 🔍 Our findings highlight how the environmental benefits of these novel methods are significantly influenced by various factors, including the carbon footprint of the local electricity grid and the efficiency and design of the plastic incinerator plants they might replace.
