COP29, held this year in Azerbaijan, is a key global event in the fight against climate change. At this summit, representatives from leading countries make critical decisions on environmental protection, emission reduction, and support for "green" initiatives that shape the planet's future. Despite ongoing Russian aggression, Ukraine is represented at COP29 for the third consecutive time, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to recovery. This year, our pavilion symbolizes the aspiration for environmental security, focusing on compensating for the catastrophic environmental damage caused by the war to both Ukrainian and European ecosystems. We emphasize the importance of supporting the principle of "build back greener" — restoring with a focus on a sustainable future. The pavilion's primary material is a Ukrainian eco-paper infused with live wildflower seeds. Artist Oleksandra Zhumailova has created a 120 m² illustration on it, showcasing 50 key environmental initiatives from Ukraine’s government, businesses, and civil society. Ukraine's presence at COP29 draws global attention to the war's environmental impact and underscores the significance of our contribution to preserving shared ecosystems. Restoring Ukraine’s natural resources is essential to European ecological security and supports the global fight against climate change. Our team supports this mission by planting 1 million trees in the Vinnytsia region to offset russia's damage. Forest restoration is vital to preserving Ukrainian nature and a foundation for a greener European future. Together, we can prevent climate change. #COP29 #BuildBackGreener #EuropeanEcology #StandWithUkraine

More action is required in combating often unmentioned underlying root causes of biodiversity loss - unsustainable land use practices, unregulated mining and monoculture plantation farming.

💥#COP16 ends with urgent commitments to global conservation efforts. After two intensive weeks of negotiations, commitments, and collaborative dialogue, #COP16 in #Cali #Colombia has concluded, resounding with a powerful message: “#Peace with #Nature.” Representatives from more than 150 countries underscored a shared commitment to addressing #biodiversity loss, #climate threats, and #environmental degradation, priorities that have taken on new urgency amid escalating global environmental crises. “Nature is life. And yet we are waging war against it. A war where there can be no winner,” stated the U.N Secretary- General. Through the diverse contributions and commitments made at COP16, the conference has set a new benchmark for #inclusive #environmental #governance, encouraging concrete actions at national and regional levels, inspiring participants and policymakers to incorporate biodiversity priorities in ways that are #equitable and #sustainable. #Standards play a crucial role in supporting global efforts to combat #biodiversityloss and implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). They address the complex, interconnected nature of biodiversity challenges. 🌎 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲... Here’s a few reflections from an inspiring and incredible Day One representing Nature Positive at COP16 Colombia! The Blue Zone was a hive of activity with a really positive buzz in the side events I attended. ✨ This post is around the theme of #implementation. At the last COP, we agreed the north star for nature. This time, we need to build the ladder to reach it. 🌡 Yesterday, there was some really interesting discussions on the implementation of climate and biodiversity agreements . We need the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the GBF to be better integrated, and the UNFCCC needs to embrace synergistic approaches to nature and climate action. Thanks to Bethan Laughlin Zoological Society of London (ZSL) for the low-down on the negotiations on this critical issue! 🌳 Other exciting discussions are happening around how we can measure the state of nature and the Nature Positive Initiative are doing amazing work building consensus on a universal set of metrics. I went to various events at the NPI Pavillion yesterday, and it was reassuring to hear how joined up the metrics conversation is with TNFD and SBTN, amongst other organisations. It was also great to speak to NatureMetrics who are doing exciting things in EDNA and streamlining biodiversity monitoring. My opinion from working with businesses is that, yes, data is critical, but let’s make sure we’re not giving companies ‘data overwhelm’, and focusing on what is the minimum amount of data needed to enable meaningful action and implementation. In the words of the wonderful Stephanie Wray "you don’t have to wait until you know everything about your relationship with nature to start doing something about it.” Businesses need to focus on action, whilst gathering the data needed to report and disclose. Finally, I was heartened to see some very passionate speeches by UK MPs: “biodiversity is the source of our economy, and the foundation of everything we have and everything we value”- well said Toby Perkins (Head of Environmental Audit Committee). Toby reminded us that COP 16 is, in some way, more important because it’s not about targets….. it’s about implementation. Incredibly grateful to hear from and meet with biodiversity, nature, technology, conservation, policy experts from all over the world. #COP16 #naturepositive #biodiversity

We are excited to share "Paving the Way to Baku and Cali" the latest brief by Carlos Eduardo Correa Escaf, the Institute’s Non-Resident Fellow, Senior Fellow of Conservation International, and former Environment Minister of Colombia. In this brief, he highlights the critical importance of both upcoming United Nations' biodiversity and climate negotiations in 2024. With the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Cali, Colombia, and the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the year is pivotal for aligning global efforts to address the intertwined crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. As nations prepare to meet the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) targets and advance the Paris Agreement, the success of these conferences will hinge on bridging substantial finance gaps, achieving ambitious conservation goals like the 30x30, and ensuring inclusive participation, particularly from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs). The outcomes from Cali and Baku could significantly influence global momentum leading up to COP30 in Brazil, marking a decade since the Paris Agreement's adoption. To better understand the stakes in this year’s talks, this brief guide previews 10 critical issues to be addressed in the negotiations.
