🌍 Driving Sustainability: European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) The EUDR is more than just a regulation, it's a crucial step towards a greener future. Here’s why it’s making waves: 1. Fighting Deforestation: EUDR restricts deforestation-linked products from entering the EU market, pushing for sustainable sourcing globally. 2. Climate Champion: Forests absorb carbon. By protecting them, EUDR supports the fight against climate change. 3. Biodiversity Boost: Safeguarding forests means protecting countless species and precious ecosystems. 4. Supply Chain Clarity: EUDR promotes transparency, helping consumers make eco-friendly choices. 5. Economic Shift: It’s a win for businesses focusing on sustainability, driving a shift toward ethical economies. EUDR is setting a global standard, empowering both businesses and consumers to lead the way in environmental stewardship. PS: Not to be confused with EuDR (European Disaster Resilience). 😉 #Sustainability #EUDR #ClimateAction #GreenEconomy #Biodiversity #DeforestationFree #SupplyChain #EthicalBusiness

“Producing food is by far the biggest cause of biodiversity collapse, water pollution and shortages, and soil erosion. After energy, it is the biggest cause of climate change.” In his latest interview for the UBS Sustainability and Impact Institute, Henry Dimbleby, the author of the UK’s National Food Strategy, thinks the agri-food sector can deliver on climate and environmental goals, but value chain partners need to be convinced that it is in their interest to change. Regulatory force will not work. Read the full interview here: http://from.ubs/6047cAks5 #shareUBS #food #biodiversity #climate #sustainability #TheInstitute

🌍 The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a commendable initiative aimed at protecting people and the planet. However, equitable implementation is key. ✅ Ensuring fair prices for agricultural produce can significantly boost the living incomes of smallholders. ✅ Western support to producing countries with green technologies is crucial to encourage sustainable production of raw agricultural materials in these regions without encroaching on new forests. ✅ Sharing wealth generated from industries that have contributed significantly to the carbon footprint by paying producing countries to preserve forests can help bridge economic inequalities. This holistic approach allows producing countries' economies to thrive while preserving forests, which can help absorb carbon emissions from Western industries. Such a strategy creates a win-win situation for our global community to limit climate change. Figure below shows the cumulative share of carbon emissions by country from 1750 to 2022. We can not talk about sustainability without the topic of feeding people. It is the core of our daily lives. The emerging question is the inter-sectoral and cross-sectoral role of private companies in the food value chain - what can we all do to ensure we can sustainably grow, move, and feed 10 billion people by 2050?

In 2020, the global food system was responsible for over 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than 80% of tropical deforestation and biodiversity loss, and 70% of global freshwater withdrawals. As we head into COP29 this November, the urgency to transform agriculture has never been greater. Environmental decline is worsening food insecurity. Regenerative practices are key to a sustainable future. #COP29 “We are already witnessing the devastating effects of environmental decline on food insecurity, due to repeated heatwaves, floods and droughts, as well as ecosystem degradation. Our global food systems are a significant contributor to this crisis, and a transition to regenerative practices is the way forward. We owe it to future generations to secure a sustainable future for all, not just a privileged few.”

In tropical regions, agricultural expansion accounts for approximately 90% of #deforestation. This leads to severe consequences: 🦜 Loss of biodiversity through the destruction of forests 🌧️ Climate change by releasing large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere 🌱 Soil degradation, leading to loss of fertility and increased runoff of sediments into water bodies. How can we promote a long-term solution? By promoting sustainable agricultural practices and implementing comprehensive land use planning, we can mitigate agricultural expansion, ergo, deforestation. Efforts to combat the impact of global food production on forests and climate change are moving towards forest-positive strategies, promoting sustainable practices and overcoming supply chain challenges.
