In today's dynamic agri-food landscape, supply chain financing (SCF) stands out as a critical tool for driving positive change. The agri-food system, characterized by its vast networks and global reach, has an unprecedented opportunity to leverage SCF to promote sustainable business and farming practices among suppliers. Financial incentives, when aligned with sustainability objectives, can incentivize suppliers to adopt environmentally responsible operations. 🌍 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬: 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬! 🌱💡 Smallholder farmers play a critical role in meeting global carbon reduction goals, with sustainable practices offering nearly 13% of the needed carbon reduction to meet the Paris Agreement targets. However, adoption of these practices remains low, particularly in developing countries, due to high costs and limited resources. In the seminar by Yanchong Zheng from MIT Sloan School of Management, it was shown that two key incentive models drive sustainable practices among smallholder farmers: 1) Carbon "Offsetting" (Third-party intermediaries provide financial rewards for sustainable adoption) and 2) Carbon "Insetting" (Downstream buyers incentivize farmers within their own value chains). Yanchong found that insetting contracts (which involve interventions like purchasing sustainable products at a premium) can deliver over 20% cost savings compared to offsetting contracts while achieving the same sustainability goals! 🌿💰 Thank you Yanchong for this very inspiring and highly relevant research talk! #Sustainability #SmallholderFarms #CarbonReduction #SupplyChain #Research #ParisAgreement

When it comes to #agrifood value chains, integrating #sustainability into business plans is a strategic imperative that cannot be ignored. Going beyond carbon and acting on nature loss is key. Focusing on #nature doesn’t just ensure the integrity of a sustainability strategy; it’s also a way of protecting businesses against significant physical, regulatory and financial risks. By following guidance from frameworks like ACT-D and TNFD, businesses can systematically assess and integrate #naturepositive actions into their strategic planning, translating corporate ambitions into actionable insights at the landscape level. Proactive nature management enables agri-food companies to navigate the evolving policy landscape, identify critical actions to mitigate negative impacts and unlock new markets and opportunities for revenue and margin growth. 👉 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e_3_4CxZ #WBCSDRoadmaps Matt Inbusch

🌍🍲 Why is Product Carbon Footprinting (PCF) Essential in the Food Industry? With an increasing global focus on sustainability, the food industry is at a critical crossroads. PCFs help companies understand, reduce, and communicate the carbon impact of their products from farm to fork. Here’s why having a PCF is essential for food brands today: 📉 Identifying Emission Hotspots: A PCF uncovers which stages—such as farming, processing, and transportation—generate the most emissions, helping companies focus their reduction efforts effectively. 🤝 Strengthening Trust and Transparency: Consumers want to support eco-conscious brands. Having a verified PCF shows a brand’s commitment to environmental impact, building trust, and aligning with consumer values. 🌱 Meeting Compliance and Staying Competitive: From the EU’s Green Deal to the USDA’s new labeling initiatives, more regulations are requiring carbon transparency. PCFs help brands stay ahead and avoid potential penalties. 💡 Driving Sustainable Innovation: The insight provided by PCFs allows companies to rethink processes, invest in greener technologies, and contribute positively to their supply chain’s sustainability. In short, PCFs are more than just numbers—they’re a tool for accountability and a gateway to a greener food industry. Do you have the PCFs of your products? #FoodIndustry #Sustainability #CarbonFootprint #ClimateAction #Ecochain

TREASoURcE policy recommendations for a circular economy 🌍🔄 Legislation can both help and hinder the circular economy transition. In TREASoURcE, one of our aims is to understand the EU and national regulatory frameworks for the three key value chains: plastics, batteries and biobased side and waste streams. Our policy work focuses on mapping these frameworks and identifying key drivers and barriers. 📊🔍 The recently published D1.3 report provides policy recommendations to both EU and national authorities. Our partners are now formulating the most impactful recommendations into targeted policy briefs and white papers for key regulatory audiences. Our goal is to promote circularity from a regulatory standpoint. 📑📈 For further insights, read the blog post by Tran Ngo and Nora Berglund or check the current status of our work below! 💡👇 https://lnkd.in/dZniFYcy #TREASoURcE #circulareconomy #policyrecommendations VTT MTK ry – Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners

Our regulatory team has been representing Agreena at the Future of Food and Beverage conference in Amsterdam. 🌱 Missed out on the event? Here are Tomasz Kowalczewski and Claudia Herrmann’s insights… 💡Consensus on the challenge – there was broad agreement that climate change poses huge challenges to the agricultural sector and a strong commitment to delivering sustainable production and decarbonising value chains. 💡Varied approaches – there are a wide variety of actions and approaches; some efforts may not always yield the expected outcomes, but provide opportunities for further engagement and improvement. 💡Partnerships and engagements – there’s a strong desire to develop deep partnerships and engagement with local NGOs and other stakeholders, with an understanding that, while projects must have defined endpoints, ongoing programmes are essential. 💡Predictability and Scope 3 reporting – companies are prioritising predictability in client actions and emphasise the need for long-term engagement in Scope 3 reporting. Science-based solutions are favoured with an emphasis on the importance of primary data over secondary data for demonstrating progress in GHG emissions reductions quantification. The ‘supply shed’ concept is highlighted as vital for generating primary data. 💡Greenwashing concerns – companies remain cautious about greenwashing accusations, with considerable uncertainty regarding recent EU policies on green claims and corporate reporting. 💡GHG inventory transparency – this is highly valued and the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) approach, in particular, is preferred for Scope 3 reporting. However, companies struggle with varied interpretations of global standards and guidelines for quantifying GHG emissions from value chains. 💡Solutions are out there – sustainable solutions and services for carbon footprint calculations and soil carbon quantification methodologies are available now, including Agreena’s supply chain solutions, which can provide companies with the robust, field-level, verified data they need to drive decarbonisation in their supply chains. Thanks to the Innovation Forum for hosting such a positive event, demonstrating the focus and practical steps being taken to build more sustainable, resilient, and regenerative food systems.
