We’re thrilled to announce that we have secured funding from the BSW Research Hub for our pioneering project on enhancing intimacy support for patients and their partners during palliative and end of life care. This significant funding, awarded under the Research Capability Funding (RCF), will facilitate critical research aimed at improving our understanding and addressing this complex area. The project looks at intimacy at end of life and will help to: 💡 Better understand patient and partner experiences 💡 Identify care needs 💡 Uncover barriers to discussing intimacy 💡 Develop strategies to better support healthcare professionals in addressing these needs, ultimately enhancing the quality of end of life care Qualitative interviews with Dorothy House patients, partners and bereaved partners began in May 2023, and interviews with healthcare professionals commenced in October 2023, laying the groundwork for this research. The RCF funding will facilitate the extension of qualitative interviews across various hospices within the region, broadening the scope to capture diverse perspectives on intimacy needs from patients, partners, bereaved partners and healthcare professionals. Our long-term aim is to develop an educational intervention to inform and train healthcare professionals and the wider healthcare community to feel more confident in discussing intimacy needs with partners and their partners towards the end of life. This research will enable hospices to improve the effectiveness of services benefitting the health and wellbeing of patients and their partners. Beyond this phase of research will be aspirations to secure future funding to expand this work to include a more national outlook. We’re excited to have received a $1.3 million grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council to tackle delirium, a common and distressing hospital complication affecting older Australians and their carers. The grant funds a three-year project that will build on the success of PREDICT, the Prevention and Early Delirium Identification Carer Toolkit piloted at The Tweed Hospital. The research collaboration involves Southern Cross, Sunshine Coast, Canberra and Sydney universities, Hunter New England and Far West LHDs, Canberra and Metro North Health Services, peak carer and consumer organisations, and lived experience patients. We are preparing the expand the National Contract Value Review process for all Phases of research next month! And what a journey it has been so far… This wonderful video is a timely boost for this work. It gives insights on delivering commercial research from the Primary Care setting and mentions the impact of expanding this process beyond secondary care NHS Organisations. This is enabled through a voluntary sign up scheme for Primary Care organisations, which is managed through the NIHR working with system partners across the UK. The intention behind establishing a consistent and predictable approach for costing and contracting is keep making it easier to set-up and access research on the places where the UK’s patients are. BMHC Board President, The Honorable Dr. Larry Wallace, Jr., Ph.D., co-authored a health-equity-focused article with Dr. Norman Chenven, MD., of Austin Regional Clinic, and David Stein, CEO of Babson Diagnostics, called "Three Guys Walk into a Conference And...", in the July 2024 Edition of the Austin Medical Times Magazine. What is unique about this collaborative piece is how it was born. Three guys, who come from very different places—a medical group, community care coordination, and a diagnostics company—met as they all sat on a panel at the 2023 Healthier Texas Summit hosted by It's Time Texas in collaboration with the University of Texas System. However, they all had one question in common and that is: "How do we remove barriers, make access to care easier, and reduce any fear and anxiety related to getting medical help?" They all acknowledged statistics show the health equity gap appears to be more acute in Texas than in many other states. According to their article, our state recently ranked poorly across 24 healthcare metric determinants spanning across four categories: access, outcomes, cost, and quality of care. They also agreed the challenge of improving care is big and complex, but the place to start is with preventative care. 🚀 Thrilled to share some amazing news! Our work with Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust has been featured in HFMA - a fantastic recognition of the work we’re doing together. We’ve been running a pilot at MSE to reduce DNAs (Did Not Attend) across 11 specialties, and the results show; ✅ an 18.8% reduction in DNAs  - and it’s improving week on week. ✅ 4.3x greater patient engagement with text messages compared to traditional two-way communication. In the UK, 12 million appointments are missed, or cancelled under short notice. If we rolled out nationally this could equate to 2.25million missed appointments being filled. As the article says, ‘One of health secretary Wes Streeting’s most pressing tasks is to bring down NHS waiting lists. There’s something stirring in Mid and South Essex that could be a vital tool in winning that battle.’ 🙏 Huge thanks to the amazing team at MSE including Tony Young and Erica White.
